What is Huai Hua Mi / Sophora japonica flower bud extract?
This is a dietary supplement made from the dried, unopened flower buds of Sophora japonica, the Japanese pagoda tree or Chinese scholar tree, a member of the pea family (Fabaceae). Botanists now place this species in a different genus, so its currently accepted name is Styphnolobium japonicum. In traditional Chinese herbalism the buds are called Huai Hua Mi, and in pharmacopoeia texts they appear as Flos Sophorae Immaturus. In China the buds have a long history as a tea material and as a natural yellow dye. Our extract is made from the buds and is offered in two forms: a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite, each prepared from ethically sourced raw material grown in China. This is a whole-bud liquid extract carrying the buds' natural spectrum of constituents - it is not an isolated or standardized single compound. We label the product by botanical name and plant part so it is clear exactly which plant and which part this is.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Sophora japonica flower buds; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses a traditional blend of vegetable glycerine, alcohol and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal-clear water, which suits those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture if you prefer a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
Is this rutin, or the same as Ku Shen or Shan Dou Gen?
No to all three, and the last two matter for safety. Our product is the whole flower bud of Sophora japonica, now botanically named Styphnolobium japonicum - which means this species has actually been moved out of the genus Sophora. Ku Shen is Sophora flavescens and Shan Dou Gen is Sophora tonkinensis; those are true Sophora species with very different profiles and their own dosing considerations, and we sell each as its own clearly labelled product. They should never be treated as interchangeable with these flower buds, so always check the full botanical name rather than the word sophora alone. Our product is also not rutin: these buds are one of the world's main commercial sources of that flavonoid, but rutin is an isolated compound sold separately, whereas ours is the whole bud. And it is not about the ornamental pagoda tree grown as a street or garden tree. We label every product by full botanical name and plant part precisely so these are never confused.
How do I use Sophora japonica flower bud liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents. The tincture and the alcohol-free glycerite are used the same way; choose the one that fits your preference.
Is this extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
This product should not be used during pregnancy. Nursing mothers, and anyone taking prescription medication or managing a health condition, should consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use, and it is wise to consult a practitioner trained in traditional Chinese herbs before combining it with other herbs. Do not use if you are allergic to any of the ingredients; because this is a member of the pea family, those with legume sensitivities should be cautious. As with any concentrated herbal extract, it is best not to exceed the suggested serving size. Please also note that other herbs share the name Sophora but are entirely different plants with different requirements - always check the full botanical name on the label.
