Frequently Asked Questions about Da Huang Extract
What is Da Huang, Chinese Rhubarb (Rheum palmatum)?
Da Huang is the dried root and rhizome of Rheum palmatum, a plant of the knotweed family, Polygonaceae. In traditional Chinese herbalism it is called Da Huang; in Western herbal traditions the same root is known as Chinese rhubarb or Turkey rhubarb. The part used here is the underground root and rhizome, not the leaf stalk. Our raw material is grown in Mongolia. The extract is offered in two forms, an alcohol-free glycerite and a traditional alcohol-based tincture. This is a whole-root liquid extract carrying the root's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized single compound, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part. Rhubarb is a strong traditional herb with important safety considerations, and it must not be confused with the edible garden rhubarb - so please read the identity and safety notes below carefully before use.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Rheum palmatum root; only the solvent differs. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, together with vegetable glycerin and water. Both deliver the root's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life.
Is this the same as edible rhubarb? Da Huang vs Turkey rhubarb.
This is the medicinal rhubarb ROOT, and it is important not to confuse it with food. First, the names: Da Huang, Chinese rhubarb and Turkey rhubarb all refer to the same plant, Rheum palmatum, and its dried root - the traditional Chinese name is Da Huang while Turkey rhubarb and Chinese rhubarb are the Western herbal names for the same root. Second, and crucially, this is not the edible garden rhubarb. The rhubarb eaten as a food - the pink "pie plant" - is the leaf STALK of a different, cultivated species (Rheum rhabarbarum and hybrids); that is a food, whereas this product is the ROOT of the medicinal species Rheum palmatum. And note that rhubarb LEAVES, of any rhubarb, are toxic because of their oxalic acid and are never eaten - only the root is used here. A couple of related species, Rheum officinale and Rheum tanguticum, are used in the same traditional way. Our product is specifically the root of Rheum palmatum. We label the botanical name and plant part on every page so there is no confusion.
How do I use Da Huang liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. Because this is a strong herb, use it only occasionally and for short periods, and follow the guidance of a qualified healthcare practitioner. Drink the entire contents. Do not exceed the suggested serving.
Is Da Huang extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Please read this carefully. Rheum palmatum root contains natural anthraquinone compounds and has a strong, well-known action on the bowel, so it should be used only occasionally and for short periods, not on an ongoing basis. Do not use this product if you are pregnant or nursing, if you have an intestinal blockage or an inflammatory bowel condition such as Crohn's disease or colitis, if you have appendicitis or undiagnosed abdominal pain, and do not give it to children. Because rhubarb can affect potassium and fluid balance, consult your healthcare practitioner before use if you take heart medication such as digoxin, diuretics, corticosteroids, or anti-arrhythmic drugs. It contains oxalates, so use caution if you are prone to kidney stones or gout; it may harmlessly tint the urine. If you are taking any other medications, consult your doctor before use. Do not exceed the suggested serving, and discontinue use and consult your practitioner if any adverse reaction occurs. Keep out of reach of children. This alcohol-free glycerite should be kept refrigerated after opening. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
