Frequently Asked Questions about Elephant Tree Extract
What is Elephant Tree / Torote (Bursera microphylla) resin extract?
Elephant tree is a liquid extract of the dried resin of Bursera microphylla, a small aromatic desert tree of the Burseraceae family, native to the Sonoran Desert and known in Spanish as torote or copal. The resin is an oleo-gum-resin, in the same botanical family as frankincense and myrrh. This alcohol-free version is a vegetable-glycerin glycerite. Two points matter: it is not for use in pregnancy, and the sticky resin can irritate sensitive skin. There is also an important sourcing point - Bursera microphylla is listed as a species at risk, so it should only come from responsible, sustainable and ethical supply. Please read the safety notes below.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Bursera microphylla resin; only the solvent differs. This alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, giving a milder carrier for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a concentrated extract with a long shelf life. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format. The resin inside is identical. Please follow the safety notes for both.
Is elephant tree the same as frankincense, myrrh or copal?
They are related but different. Elephant tree (Bursera microphylla) is in the Burseraceae family - the same family as frankincense (Boswellia serrata) and myrrh and guggul (Commiphora species) - and all of them yield aromatic resins, which is why they are sometimes grouped together. But they are different plants (different genera) with different resins. Bursera is actually the classic botanical source of Mexican "copal." Note, though, that the product we list as "Copal Oro" is a different plant again - Shorea javanica, of the Dipterocarpaceae family - so "copal" can mean more than one resin. We label ours clearly as elephant tree / torote (Bursera microphylla) resin so it is not confused with the others.
How do I use Elephant Tree liquid extract?
Shake well first. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. The alcohol-free glycerite has a milder carrier. Do not exceed the suggested serving, and keep to short-term use, since its internal use is not well studied. Please read the safety information below before use. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
