Eucalyptus and Spearmint Tincture

This is an alcohol-based liquid extract (tincture) of two aromatic leaves extracted together in equal parts and named for its ingredients: the sickle-shaped leaf of the Australian blue gum and the sweet leaf of garden spearmint. Both are also sold on their own. It is a traditional herbal product for adults only - please read the safety information below before use.

  • Eucalyptus, leaf - Eucalyptus globulus leaf (Myrtaceae) - whole-leaf extract, not the essential oil
  • Spearmint, leaf - Mentha spicata leaf (Lamiaceae)
  • Extract type: Alcohol tincture. Other ingredients: organic alcohol, vegetable glycerin, crystal clear purified water
  • Origin: Responsibly sourced, cultivated botanicals. Gluten free. Made in the USA.

What is in the blend

  • Eucalyptus leaf - the long, blue-grey, sickle-shaped leaf of the Tasmanian blue gum, a fast-growing tree planted around the world; the dried leaf is extracted whole here, which is a very different thing from the distilled essential oil. The leaf carries cineole, the aromatic compound of eucalyptus, which is why this blend is for adults only.
  • Spearmint leaf - the bright green, pointed leaf of the sweet garden mint, a true species (unlike peppermint, which is a hybrid) whose mild scent comes from carvone rather than menthol; it is the mint of mint sauce and chewing gum.

Why a tincture

The two dried leaves are macerated together in organic alcohol with a little vegetable glycerin and water - the classic herbal method. A tincture keeps for years at room temperature in a cool, dark place, has a cool, camphor-like, minty taste, and a few drops disappear in a glass of water or juice. A serving of 20 to 30 drops is roughly 1 ml of liquid, so the amount of alcohol per serving is small.

How to use

Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a little water or juice and drink it, up to the frequency shown on the label. Do not exceed the label serving, and do not use it for long periods without a practitioner. Store in a cool, dark place with the cap tight.

Tincture or drops?

If you avoid alcohol or prefer a milder taste, the same two-leaf blend is available as Eucalyptus and Spearmint Alcohol-Free Drops - the glycerite version. The leaves and proportions are identical; only the extraction liquid differs.

Important safety information - please read before use

This blend contains eucalyptus leaf and is for adults only. Please read before use.

  • Children: eucalyptus leaf contains cineole, which has caused seizures and drowsiness in children even in small amounts. This blend is for adults only; never give it to children.
  • Seizure disorders: do not use if you have a history of seizures.
  • Do not exceed the label serving: too much eucalyptus can cause nausea, dizziness or drowsiness. Stop and seek medical help if these occur.
  • Hormones: spearmint can lower androgen (testosterone) levels. Consult your doctor before use if you have a hormone-sensitive condition, low testosterone, or are trying to conceive.
  • Kidneys and liver: large amounts of spearmint may burden the kidneys and liver. Do not use if you have kidney or liver disease.
  • Medicines: spearmint may change how the liver processes some drugs. Ask your pharmacist if you take prescription medicines.
  • Pregnancy / nursing: do not use.
  • Allergies: spearmint is a mint-family (Lamiaceae) plant; eucalyptus is a myrtle-family (Myrtaceae) plant.
  • Contains alcohol. If you have a medical condition or take medication, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Eucalyptus and Spearmint Tincture?
This is a two-herb liquid blend named for its ingredients: eucalyptus leaf (Eucalyptus globulus) and spearmint leaf (Mentha spicata), extracted together in equal parts in organic alcohol with a little vegetable glycerin and water. Eucalyptus is the tall Tasmanian blue gum with long, sickle-shaped, aromatic leaves, planted around the world; spearmint is the sweet garden mint of cool climates, the mint of mint sauce and chewing gum. Each is also sold on its own. It is a liquid herbal tincture, not a capsule, and it is for adults only. It is a botanical product and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Please read the safety note below - eucalyptus is unsuitable for children, and spearmint has hormonal cautions.
What is the difference between the tincture and the alcohol-free drops?
Both contain the same two leaves in the same proportions; only the extraction liquid differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water - the classic method with the longest shelf life at room temperature and a cool, camphor-like, minty taste. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, milder and naturally sweet, for those who avoid alcohol. Choose whichever suits you; the safety notes apply to both.
Is this the same as eucalyptus oil? What is the difference between spearmint and peppermint?
No. This blend is a water-and-alcohol extract of the whole dried eucalyptus leaf, not the concentrated essential oil distilled from it; the essential oil is many times stronger and is never taken by mouth undiluted. The leaf extract still carries cineole, the aromatic compound of eucalyptus, which is why the blend is for adults only. Spearmint and peppermint are different plants: spearmint (Mentha spicata) is a true species with a sweet, mild scent from carvone, while peppermint is a hybrid of spearmint and water mint with the sharp, cooling bite of menthol. Eucalyptus leaf and spearmint leaf are each available as single extracts, and eucalyptus also appears with peppermint in our Larynx Protector blend.
How do I use Eucalyptus and Spearmint Tincture?

Do not exceed the label serving, and do not use it for long periods without a practitioner. Store in a cool, dark place with the cap tight, and keep out of reach of children.
