Frequently Asked Questions about Hei Dou Extract
What is Hei Dou / black turtle bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) seed extract?
This product is a liquid extract of the dried seed of Phaseolus vulgaris - the common black bean, also called black turtle bean - a legume of the Fabaceae family. An important naming note: in Chinese medicine the name "Hei Dou" (heidou) traditionally refers to the black SOYBEAN, Glycine max, which is a different plant (we carry that separately as Black Soybean). This card is the Phaseolus vulgaris black bean. This alcohol-free version is a vegetable-glycerin glycerite of the dried seed. Because it is made from the raw bean, and raw common beans naturally contain lectins, please read the safety notes below, and do not use it during pregnancy.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Phaseolus vulgaris seed; only the solvent differs. This alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method with a long shelf life. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format. The seed inside is identical, and the same safety notes apply to both.
Is this "Hei Dou" the same as black soybean, and how is it different from adzuki?
It is a common point of confusion. Traditional "Hei Dou" is the black soybean (Glycine max), which we carry separately as Black Soybean and Soybean. This particular card is the common black bean, Phaseolus vulgaris (black turtle bean) - a different genus, though both are legumes. It is also different from Chi Xiao Dou / adzuki (Phaseolus angularis), which we list as Phaseolus. If you specifically want the traditional black-soybean "Hei Dou," choose our Black Soybean (Glycine max); this card is the Phaseolus vulgaris black bean.
How do I use Hei Dou / black turtle bean liquid extract?
Shake well first. A typical amount is 20 to 30 drops in 2 oz of water, up to three times a day, or as directed by your practitioner, and do not exceed the suggested serving. Do not use it during pregnancy. Because raw common beans contain natural lectins (which normal cooking destroys), keep to the suggested serving of this extract. This alcohol-free glycerite has a milder carrier. Store in a cool, dry place, and shake before each use.
Is Hei Dou / black turtle bean right for everyone? Safety information.
Please read this carefully. Raw-bean lectins: common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) naturally contain phytohaemagglutinin, a lectin that is toxic in raw or undercooked beans and is normally destroyed by cooking; because this is a raw-bean extract, do not exceed the suggested serving, and stop if you notice nausea, vomiting, or stomach upset. Legume allergy: avoid it if you are allergic to beans or legumes. Pregnancy and nursing: the label advises against use during pregnancy, and you should consult your practitioner before use while breastfeeding. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Do not give it to infants or children. This alcohol-free glycerite is best refrigerated after opening. Keep out of reach of children. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
