Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri), also called water hyssop or herb of grace, is a creeping perennial of the plantain family, Plantaginaceae, formerly placed among the figworts, native to wetlands across India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Southeast Asia and found widely in the tropics, including coastal Florida and the Gulf states. It is a succulent, mat-forming herb that roots at the nodes along muddy banks and in shallow water, with smooth, fleshy, spoon-shaped leaves about a centimeter long in opposite pairs. Small, solitary, five-petaled flowers of white to pale blue appear on short stalks from the leaf axils through the warm months. The plant tastes bitter. We extract the dried whole herb.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
