Cat's Claw (Uncaria tomentosa), una de gato in Spanish, is a woody climbing liana of the coffee family, Rubiaceae, native to the Amazon rainforest and the foothills of the Andes in Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, and Brazil, and across Central America to Guatemala. Its stems climb 20 to 30 meters into the canopy, with opposite, oval, softly hairy leaves and, at the base of each leaf pair, two curved, woody hooks shaped like a cat's claws that hold the vine to its host tree. Dense, ball-shaped heads of small yellowish-white tubular flowers hang on long stalks. The inner bark is pale reddish-brown and fibrous. We extract the dried inner bark.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
