Goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis) is a small woodland perennial of the buttercup family, Ranunculaceae, native to the deciduous forests of eastern North America. A hairy stem 15-30 cm tall carries two palmately lobed leaves and a single greenish-white flower without petals, followed by a raspberry-like red fruit. The thick, knotted rhizome is bright yellow inside from berberine and stains anything it touches; wild stands are listed under CITES Appendix II, so cultivated root is now standard. We extract the dried leaf and the dried root separately.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
