Motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca) is a tall, coarse perennial of the mint family, Lamiaceae, native to central Asia and southeastern Europe and naturalized across North America along fences and waste ground. It grows 60-120 cm tall with stout square stems, dark green, palmately lobed lower leaves that narrow to three-toothed upper leaves, and dense whorls of small, furry pink-purple flowers set in spiny calyces along the upper stem. The herb has a strong, disagreeable smell and a very bitter taste. We extract the dried herb.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
