Papaya (Carica papaya) is a fast-growing, tree-like herbaceous plant of the papaya family, Caricaceae, native to tropical America and now cultivated throughout the tropics, including Hawaii. It has a single soft, unbranched trunk crowned by large, deeply lobed leaves on long hollow stalks, and bears the familiar melon-like fruit directly on the trunk. The leaves, stems and unripe fruit exude a milky latex rich in the enzyme papain. We extract the dried leaf.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
