Sheep Sorrel (Rumex acetosella) is a slender perennial of the knotweed family, Polygonaceae, native to Europe and Asia and now widespread across North America on acidic, sandy, disturbed ground, old fields and lawns. It spreads by creeping roots into colonies 10 to 40 cm tall, with distinctive arrow-shaped leaves bearing two backward-pointing lobes at the base, and loose spikes of tiny reddish or yellow-green flowers on separate male and female plants. The leaves taste sharply sour from oxalic acid, like the garden sorrel. We extract the dried herb.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
