Jin Ying Zi (Rosa laevigata) is a climbing shrub native to fields, thickets, farms and low-elevation mountain areas in China. It has been naturalized throughout much of the southeastern US from North Carolina to Florida west to Texas. This is an evergreen climber that grows up to 6-20’ in length on arching stems armed with hooked thorns. It can also be grown as a sprawling free-standing shrub. Stems are clad with trifoliate dark green leaves that consist of coarsely toothed leaflets. Single, white flowers (about 4” in diameter) with scalloped petals and yellow stamens bloom for several weeks in spring. Flowers are followed by large, setose, orange-red hips (about 2” long). *

Frequently Asked Questions about Jin Ying Zi Extract
What is Cherokee Rose Fruit (Jin Ying Zi) extract?
Cherokee rose fruit extract is a dietary supplement made from the dried fruit of Rosa laevigata, a climbing rose of the family Rosaceae. In English the plant is called the Cherokee rose, and in traditional Chinese herbalism the fruit is called Jin Ying Zi; in pharmacy references it appears as Fructus Rosae Laevigatae. Our extract is made specifically from the fruit (a type of rose hip) and is offered in two forms: a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite, each prepared from ethically sourced raw material. This is a whole-fruit liquid extract that carries the fruit's natural spectrum of constituents - it is not an isolated or standardized single-compound product. We label the product by its botanical name and plant part so it is clear this is the fruit of Rosa laevigata, distinct from other roses and rose hips.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Rosa laevigata fruit; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses a traditional cold-maceration blend of vegetable glycerine, alcohol and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal-clear water, which suits those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture if you prefer a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
Is this the same as rose hips, or the Cherokee rose garden plant?
Not quite - it is specifically the fruit of the Cherokee rose. Our product is made from Rosa laevigata, which is one particular rose species. The common rose hips found in most teas and supplements usually come from a different species, the dog rose (Rosa canina), so this is not the same as generic rose hips. It is also different from the ornamental Cherokee rose grown in gardens and known as the state flower of Georgia: while it is the same plant botanically, our product is the dried FRUIT prepared as a supplement, not the flowering garden vine. And it is a whole-fruit extract, not an isolated constituent. We label the product clearly by its botanical name and plant part so there is no confusion between the Cherokee rose fruit, common rose hips, and the ornamental rose.
How do I use Cherokee Rose Fruit liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents. The tincture and the alcohol-free glycerite are used the same way; choose the one that fits your preference.
Is Cherokee Rose Fruit extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
This product is not to be used during pregnancy. It is also best avoided while nursing unless supervised by a practitioner. As with any supplement, it is important not to exceed the suggested serving size. If you take any prescription medication or are managing a health condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. Store this tincture in a cool, dark place, where it keeps for up to four years. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS
Our Jin Ying Zi (Rosa Laevigata) Fruit is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.
METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION
Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.
COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING
Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
  • Viscosity measurement
  • Refractometric analysis
