What is Honeysuckle Stem (Ren Dong Teng) extract?

Honeysuckle stem extract is a dietary supplement made from the dried stem of Lonicera japonica, the Japanese honeysuckle. In traditional Chinese herbalism the stem is called Ren Dong Teng - the "winter-enduring vine" - and in pharmacy references it appears as Caulis Lonicerae Japonicae. It is a different part, and a different traditional herb, from the honeysuckle flower, which is called Jin Yin Hua and is offered as a separate product. Our extract is made specifically from the stem and comes in two forms: a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite. This is a whole-stem liquid extract that carries the stem's natural spectrum of constituents - it is not an isolated or standardized single-compound product. We label the product by its botanical name and plant part so it is clear this is the stem of Lonicera japonica, distinct from the flower and from the ornamental vine.

What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?

Both are liquid extracts of the same Lonicera japonica stem; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses a traditional blend of vegetable glycerine, alcohol and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal-clear water, which suits those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture if you prefer a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.

Is this the honeysuckle flower, or the garden vine?

Neither. Our product is the dried STEM (the vine) of Lonicera japonica, known in traditional Chinese herbalism as Ren Dong Teng. This is a different herb from the honeysuckle FLOWER, which is Jin Yin Hua (gold-silver flower) and is sold separately - the same plant provides two distinct herbs used in different ways. It is also not the ornamental garden honeysuckle or the wild, invasive Japanese honeysuckle vine that people plant or work to remove; while our stem does come from that species, our product is the dried medicinal stem prepared as a supplement, not the living garden or wild vine. And it is the stem, not the plant's berries, some of which are not considered safe to eat. We label the product clearly by its botanical name and plant part so there is no confusion between the honeysuckle stem, the honeysuckle flower, the ornamental vine, and the berries.
