Mangosteen is an evergreen tree up to 25 m high with a pyramidal crown and black-brown bark. The leaves are ovate-oblong, dark green above and yellow green below, 9-25 cm long and 4.5-10 cm wide. The young leaves are pink. Flowers are with fleshy green with red spots petals. The fruit is round, with a diameter of 3.4-7.5 cm, covered with a thick (up to 1 cm) maroon-violet inedible peel, containing gummy coloring latex. Mangosteen's homeland is Southeast Asia. It is widely cultivated in Thailand, Myanmar, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, India, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, the Antilles, Central America, Colombia, tropical Africa (Zanzibar, Liberia, Ghana and Gabon).*
