Important safety information - please read carefully before use

Madder root contains anthraquinones, including lucidin. Please read these cautions before use.

  • External use only - never internal: this product is for topical use and must not be swallowed. Madder root contains lucidin, which is genotoxic (it can damage DNA) and has caused cancer in animal studies; herbal use of madder root by mouth is no longer permitted in some countries, which is why we offer it strictly for external use.
  • Skin: apply to intact skin only - do not use on open wounds or broken skin, and keep it away from the eyes and mucous membranes. Do a patch test first, and stop if redness, itching, or rash develops.
  • Staining: madder is a strong natural dye and can stain skin, nails, and fabric.
  • Pregnancy / nursing: do not use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
  • Do not use on infants or children. If you have a medical condition or take medication, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions about Madder Root Extract
What is Madder Root (Rubia tinctorum) topical extract?
Madder Root is the common name for the root of Rubia tinctorum, a plant of the madder family (Rubiaceae), also called Dyer's Madder or Common Madder; it was historically the source of a red textile dye. This is a liquid extract of the dried root FOR EXTERNAL (TOPICAL) USE ONLY - it is not for internal use. This alcohol-free version is a vegetable-glycerin glycerite, applied to the skin. Madder root naturally contains anthraquinones, including lucidin, which is genotoxic if taken internally, which is why we offer it strictly for external use. Please read the important safety notes below.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Rubia tinctorum root for external use; only the solvent differs. This alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water; the tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method with a long shelf life. Choose whichever suits your topical routine. The root inside is identical, and the same external-use safety notes apply to both - neither is for internal use.
Is this the same as Indian Madder?
No - they are different species of the same genus. This page is Madder Root, Rubia tinctorum (European or Dyer's Madder). Indian Madder is Rubia cordifolia, which we list separately, also using the root. Both belong to the madder family and both contain anthraquinone compounds, but they are different species and are not interchangeable. We label this page clearly as Rubia tinctorum root.
How do I use Madder Root topical liquid extract?
For external use only. Shake well first, and do a patch test on a small area before wider use. Apply to intact skin only - do not use on open wounds or broken skin, and keep it away from the eyes and mucous membranes. Do not take it internally. Note that madder is a strong natural dye and can stain skin, nails, and fabric. Discontinue use if any irritation occurs. Store in a cool, dark place, and keep out of reach of children.
Is Madder Root topical safe for everyone? Important safety information.
Please read this carefully. External use only: this product is not for internal use. Madder root contains anthraquinones, including lucidin, which is genotoxic (it can damage DNA) and has caused cancer in animal studies; for this reason, herbal use of madder root by mouth is no longer permitted in some countries, so do not swallow this product. Skin: apply to intact skin only, not to open wounds; madder is a strong dye and will stain, so do a patch test first, and stop if redness, itching, or rash develops. Keep away from the eyes. Pregnancy and nursing: do not use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Do not use on infants or children. If you have a medical condition or take medication, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead.
