The radish (Raphanus sativus) is an edible root vegetable of the Brassicaceae family that was domesticated in Europe in pre-Roman times. Radishes are grown and consumed throughout the world, being mostly eaten raw as a crunchy salad vegetable. They have numerous varieties, varying in size, color and the length of time they take to mature. They are sometimes grown as companion plants and suffer from few pests and diseases. They germinate quickly and grow rapidly, smaller varieties being ready for consumption within a month while larger daikon varieties taking several months. Some radishes are grown for their seeds: oilseed radishes, for instance, may be grown for oil production. Others are used for sprouting and both roots and leaves are sometimes served cooked.*

Frequently Asked Questions about Radish Extract
What is Radish / Lai Fu Zi (Raphanus sativus) seed extract?
Radish seed is a liquid extract of the dried seed of Raphanus sativus, the common radish, a cruciferous vegetable of the Brassicaceae (mustard) family. In traditional Chinese herbalism the radish seed is called Lai Fu Zi (in pharmacy, Semen Raphani). This tincture is extracted with organic alcohol at 48% by volume. It is a whole-seed liquid extract carrying the seed's natural constituents, such as volatile sulphur compounds and sinapine, and it is meant to be taken internally by the drop. Please note this is the radish SEED (Lai Fu Zi) - a different part from black radish root (Raphanus sativus var. niger), which we sell separately - and please read the safety notes below, especially the note about not combining it with ginseng.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Raphanus sativus seed; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol at 48% by volume with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The botanical inside is identical. Please follow the safety notes for both.
How is radish SEED different from black radish and daikon?
They all come from the radish plant (Raphanus sativus) but differ by part and type. This product is the SEED - the radish seed, known in Chinese herbalism as Lai Fu Zi. Black radish is the ROOT of a specific dark-skinned variety (Raphanus sativus var. niger), used differently in Western herbalism, and we sell it separately as a root extract. Daikon is the large white radish, a culinary variety whose sprouting seed is also sold. We label ours clearly as the radish seed (Lai Fu Zi) so it is not mixed up with the black radish root product. If you specifically want the root, that is the black radish item.
How do I use Radish seed / Lai Fu Zi liquid extract?
Shake well before use. The suggested serving for adults is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water or juice, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to a little water softens the taste. Do not exceed the suggested serving. Please read the safety information below before use, especially if you take ginseng. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is Radish seed (Lai Fu Zi) right for everyone? Safety information.
Radish is a food plant and the seed is generally well tolerated at sensible amounts, but a few cautions apply. In traditional practice, radish seed (Lai Fu Zi) is specifically NOT combined with ginseng (Ren Shen), because ginseng is a qi tonic and radish seed disperses qi - they work against each other, so do not take them together. Because radish is a cruciferous (mustard-family) plant, avoid it if you are allergic to mustard or cruciferous vegetables. Traditionally it is used only where there is food stagnation and is avoided in people who are weak or depleted (qi or blood deficiency). If you are pregnant or nursing, consult your practitioner before use, as radish seed strongly moves and descends qi. Keep to the suggested serving and do not exceed it. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. This tincture contains 48% alcohol by volume and should be stored in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
