Frequently Asked Questions about Round Cardamon Extract
What is Round Cardamom / Bai Dou Kou (Amomum kravanh) fruit extract?
Round cardamom is a liquid extract of the dried fruit of Amomum kravanh (also written Amomum compactum), the white or round cardamom, an aromatic spice of the Zingiberaceae (ginger) family; in traditional Chinese medicine the fruit is known as Bai Dou Kou. This tincture is extracted with organic alcohol. A note on the botanical name: some labels (including the older version of ours) show "Amomi Kravanh," which is a Latin fragment from the pharmacopeial name Fructus Amomi Rotundus rather than a proper botanical name; the correct binomial is Amomum kravanh. This white/round cardamom is a food spice, and it is a different plant from the familiar green cardamom - please see the note on the cardamom family below.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Amomum kravanh fruit; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The fruit inside is identical.
How is round cardamom different from ordinary cardamom, Cao Guo or black cardamom?
Several spices are called "cardamom," so it helps to be clear. Ours, round or white cardamom, is Amomum kravanh (Bai Dou Kou). Green or "true" cardamom - the common cooking spice - is a different plant, Elettaria cardamomum, which we sell separately simply as Cardamom. Cao Guo (Amomum tsaoko), sometimes called Chinese black cardamom, is another different species we list on its own. Black cardamom on our site is yet another plant, Alpinia oxyphylla. And "grains of paradise" is Aframomum melegueta. These are all in the ginger family but are distinct plants with distinct flavors and uses. We label ours clearly as round cardamom / Bai Dou Kou (Amomum kravanh) fruit so it is not mixed up with the others.
How do I use Round Cardamom liquid extract?
Shake well first. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to water softens the taste. Do not exceed the suggested serving. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is Round Cardamom right for everyone? Safety information.
Round cardamom (Bai Dou Kou) is an aromatic food spice with a good safety record for most people, but a few notes apply. Allergy: although uncommon, some people are sensitive to cardamom or related spices and may react - stop use and seek care if that happens. Traditional use: in traditional Chinese medicine it is a warming, aromatic herb and is used cautiously in people described as having "dry heat" or heat from yin deficiency (for example dry mouth and a red tongue); taking more than needed may cause dry mouth or constipation, so keep to the suggested serving. Pregnancy and nursing: cardamom is generally fine as a food, but concentrated extracts are different - do NOT use it during pregnancy unless a qualified practitioner advises it, and consult a practitioner before use if you are breastfeeding. This is a spice extract, not a treatment for any condition - do not use it to self-treat a medical condition; see a qualified doctor instead. Do not give it to infants or young children. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. This tincture contains alcohol and should be stored in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS
Our Round Cardamon (Amomi Kravanh) Fruit is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur. and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.
METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION
Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.
COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING
Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
