Shan Yao, or Chinese yam, is a variety of flowering plant in the Dioscoreaceae family. It is native to China. Chinese yam vines usually grow up to 3–5 m in height. They twine clockwise. The leaves are up to 11 cm long and broad. They are lobed at the base and bigger ones may have lobed edges. They may be alternately or oppositely arranged or borne in whorls. In the leaf axils appear warty rounded bulbils about 2 cm long. The flowers smell like cinnamon. The plant produces one or more spindle-shaped or cylindrical tubers. Chinese yam contains diosgenin, mucilage, choline, starch, sugar, protein, free amino acids, abscisin, vitamin C, amylase, etc. *

Frequently Asked Questions about Shan Yao Extract
What is Shan Yao / Chinese Yam (Dioscorea polystachya) root extract?
Shan Yao is a liquid extract of the dried root of Dioscorea polystachya, the Chinese yam, a food-grade tuber in the yam family (Dioscoreaceae). It is known in traditional Chinese herbalism as Shan Yao and is eaten as a vegetable across East Asia. You may also see it labeled with the older botanical name Dioscorea opposita; Dioscorea polystachya is the currently accepted name. This alcohol-free version is a vegetable-glycerin glycerite. It is a whole-root liquid extract carrying the plant's natural constituents, including starches and mucilage, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and it is meant to be taken internally by the drop. The raw material is responsibly sourced from Vietnam (Chinese yam is cultivated) and each batch is gluten free. Please note this is the food-grade Chinese yam, which is different from wild yam and from the toxic air yam - see below.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Dioscorea polystachya root; only the solvent differs. This alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water, giving it a milder taste that suits those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The tincture uses organic alcohol at 48% by volume with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format. The botanical inside is identical.
How is Chinese yam different from wild yam and air yam?
This is an important distinction because several plants are called "yam." Our product is Chinese yam, Dioscorea polystachya (also labeled Dioscorea opposita), known as Shan Yao - a food-grade tuber eaten as a vegetable and considered gentle. It is NOT wild yam: wild yam is a different species, Dioscorea villosa, which is often marketed around diosgenin and hormonal or menopause themes; the two should not be confused, and eating Chinese yam does not raise DHEA. It is also NOT air yam, Dioscorea bulbifera, which is a different species that can be toxic to the liver and is not a food in the way Chinese yam is. We also carry Long Yam (Dioscorea hypoglauca). Because these share the word "yam," we label each by botanical name and plant part. Chinese yam and "Shan Yao" are the same plant - if you have seen our Chinese Yam listing, it is the same species as this one.
How do I use Shan Yao / Chinese Yam root liquid extract?
Shake well before use. The suggested serving for adults is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water or juice, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Chinese yam has a mild, slightly starchy character. Because it is alcohol free, this glycerite can be taken directly or added to a cool drink. Do not exceed the suggested serving, and see the safety notes below. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is Shan Yao / Chinese Yam extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Chinese yam (Dioscorea polystachya) is eaten as a food and is considered gentle and low in toxicity, suitable for most ages, so keep to the suggested serving. The most important safety point is one of identity: make sure you are using Chinese yam and not two other "yams" - wild yam (Dioscorea villosa), a different species marketed around diosgenin and hormones, and especially air yam (Dioscorea bulbifera), a different species that can be toxic to the liver. This product is the food-grade Chinese yam. As a general precaution with any concentrated extract, consult a healthcare practitioner before use during pregnancy or nursing, and if you take any medication or have a medical condition. Keep out of reach of children. This alcohol-free glycerite is best refrigerated after opening. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
