Frequently Asked Questions about Shan Zha Extract
What is Shan Zha / Chinese Hawthorn (Crataegus pinnatifida) fruit extract?
Shan Zha is a liquid extract of the dried fruit of Crataegus pinnatifida, the Chinese hawthorn, a tree of the rose family (Rosaceae). Its tart red fruit, called haw, is well known in China both in traditional herbalism (as Shan Zha) and as a food - it is made into haw flakes and candies. This tincture is extracted with organic alcohol at 48% by volume. It is a whole-fruit liquid extract carrying the fruit's natural constituents, including flavonoids and triterpene acids, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and it is meant to be taken internally by the drop. The raw material is responsibly sourced and each batch is gluten free. Please note this is the Chinese hawthorn (Crataegus pinnatifida), a different species from the Western hawthorns we also sell, and please read the important safety notes below - especially if you take heart or blood-pressure medication.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Crataegus pinnatifida fruit; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol at 48% by volume with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The botanical inside is identical. Please follow the safety notes for both.
How is Shan Zha different from your Hawthorn (berry / leaf and flower) products?
They are all hawthorns (genus Crataegus) but different species and parts. This product, Shan Zha, is the fruit of Crataegus pinnatifida, the Chinese hawthorn - the tart red haw used both as a food and in Chinese herbalism, where it is classed among the herbs that relieve food stagnation. Our other Hawthorn products are the Western hawthorns, Crataegus laevigata and Crataegus monogyna, offered as berry and as leaf-and-flower. They overlap in the genus but are distinct botanicals, so we label each by botanical name and plant part. If your recipe or practitioner specified Chinese hawthorn or Shan Zha, this is the one; if they specified Western hawthorn berry or hawthorn leaf and flower, choose those pages instead.
How do I use Shan Zha / Chinese-hawthorn fruit liquid extract?
Shake well before use. The suggested serving for adults is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water or juice, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Shan Zha has a pleasantly tart, fruity taste. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to a little water softens the taste. Do not exceed the suggested serving. Please read the safety information below carefully before use, especially if you take medication. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is Shan Zha right for everyone? Important safety information.
Chinese hawthorn is a food-adjacent fruit and is considered low in toxicity - the haw is eaten as a snack in China - and hawthorn preparations are recognized in Europe as traditional remedies for mild heart complaints. However, there are important cautions because hawthorn acts on the heart and circulation. Most importantly: hawthorn can strengthen the effect of cardiac glycoside medicines such as digoxin and digitoxin, so if you take digoxin do NOT use this product without the supervision of your doctor, as your medication dose may need adjusting; it can also add to the effect of blood-pressure medications, so consult your healthcare practitioner if you take any heart or blood-pressure medicine. Large doses should be avoided during pregnancy; consult a practitioner if nursing. If you take any medication or have any medical condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. This tincture contains 48% alcohol by volume and should be stored in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
