Frequently Asked Questions about Teasel Extract
What is teasel root extract used for?
Teasel root extract is a dietary supplement made from the dried root of Dipsacus fullonum, a biennial herb native to Europe and western Asia, widely naturalized throughout North America. The common name teasel - and the modern English word tease - share their origin with this plant: the dried seed heads were used for centuries in the textile trade to raise the nap on wool and other woven fibers. Dipsacus fullonum root is a source of iridoid glycosides including loganin and sweroside, along with acanthosides, caffeic acid derivatives, and spermine-type alkaloids. A closely related species, Dipsacus asper (known as Xu Duan in TCM), has extensive history in Traditional Chinese Medicine for joint and bone support; D. fullonum shares the same genus. As a dietary supplement, teasel root extract is used to support general wellness and joint comfort. These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
What is the difference between teasel root drops and teasel root tincture?
HawaiiPharm offers teasel root in two liquid formats. The alcohol-free glycerite drops use vegetable glycerin and purified water as solvents, making them suitable for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The teasel root tincture uses grain alcohol as the primary solvent, which is the traditional method of herbal extraction. Both are made from the same dried Dipsacus fullonum root.
What is Dipsacus fullonum?
Dipsacus fullonum, commonly known as common teasel or fuller's teasel, is a biennial herb in the family Caprifoliaceae, native to Europe, North Africa, and western Asia, and widely naturalized throughout North America where it is considered an invasive species in many states. In its first year the plant forms a ground-level rosette of coarse, bristly leaves; in its second year it sends up a tall, erect, prickly stem reaching 1-2 meters, with paired clasping leaves that form water-collecting cups at each stem junction, and a distinctive egg-shaped to cylindrical spiny flower head bearing small lilac to purple flowers. The dried seed heads were used for centuries to raise (tease) the nap on woolen fabric and other textiles, giving both the plant and the English word tease their common origin. The genus name Dipsacus derives from the Greek dipsa, meaning thirst, referring to the pools of rainwater that collect in the cup-like leaf axils of the plant. HawaiiPharm's teasel root extract is made from dried Dipsacus fullonum root.
How do I use teasel root liquid extract?
The suggested use is 20-30 drops taken three times daily, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Add the drops to water, tea, or juice before consuming. Shake the bottle well before each use, as natural separation may occur. Store in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight. Do not exceed the suggested serving size unless directed by a healthcare professional.
Are there any precautions when taking teasel root supplement?
Consult a healthcare provider before use if you are pregnant or nursing, as the safety of Dipsacus fullonum root during pregnancy has not been established. Consult a healthcare provider before use if you take any prescription medications, as the effects of teasel root on drug metabolism are not well established. Consult a healthcare provider before use if you have a known bleeding disorder or take blood-thinning medications. Do not use if you have known allergies to plants in the Caprifoliaceae family, which includes honeysuckle and valerian. Do not exceed the recommended serving size. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
