Urinary Bladder Support Alcohol-Free Drops
This is an alcohol-free liquid extract (glycerite) of four herbs extracted together in equal parts. Three are mild, food-familiar plants; the fourth, uva ursi, is a stronger leaf traditionally used only in short courses, so this blend carries specific limits - please read the safety information below before use. All four herbs are also sold on their own.
- Corn silk - Zea mays stigma (Poaceae)
- Couch grass, root - Elymus repens rhizome (Poaceae) - also called quackgrass
- Marshmallow, leaf - Althaea officinalis leaf (Malvaceae) - the leaf, not the root
- Uva ursi, leaf - Arctostaphylos uva-ursi leaf (Ericaceae) - bearberry; short-course herb
- Extract type: Alcohol-free glycerite - liquid drops. Other ingredients: vegetable glycerin, purified water

What is in the blend
- Corn silk - the fine, silky threads from the top of an ear of corn, dried; a mild herb of North American and Chinese tradition, and a food by-product familiar to anyone who has shucked corn.
- Couch grass - the creeping white rhizome of the common grass gardeners know as quackgrass; sweet-tasting and starchy, one of the mildest herbs in the European pharmacopoeias.
- Marshmallow - the soft, velvety leaf of the pink-flowered mallow of European marshes, rich in mucilage. This blend uses the leaf; the root is a separate product.
- Uva ursi - the small, leathery evergreen leaf of bearberry, a creeping shrub of northern heaths and mountains. It contains arbutin, which is why European herbal monographs limit it to short courses.
Why the alcohol-free drops
The four dried herbs are extracted together in vegetable glycerin and purified water, so there is no ethanol in the bottle - the version to choose if you avoid alcohol. Glycerin gives the drops a mild, naturally sweet taste, and the marshmallow leaf adds a little of its slippery texture.
What is a glycerite?
A glycerite is a liquid herbal extract made with vegetable glycerin instead of alcohol. Glycerin is a clear, naturally sweet liquid from plant oils; it extracts and preserves the water-soluble parts of the herbs. Because glycerin is a weaker preservative than alcohol, keep the bottle refrigerated after opening. The glycerin and water percentages are printed on the label.
How to use
Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a glass of water and drink it, up to the frequency shown on the label, and drink plenty of water through the day. Use it for no more than one week at a time and no more than five courses a year. Do not exceed the label serving. Take it at least two hours apart from any medication (see the safety note). Refrigerate after opening and use within the period printed on the label.
Drops or tincture?
If you prefer the classic alcohol-based extract with the longest shelf life at room temperature, the same four-herb blend is available as Urinary Bladder Support Tincture - the alcohol-based version. The herbs and proportions are identical; only the extraction liquid differs.
Important safety information - please read before use
This blend contains uva ursi and is for short courses only. Please read before use.
- See a doctor: if you have fever, chills, back or side pain, blood in the urine, or symptoms that last more than a few days, see a doctor promptly. These need medical diagnosis, and no herbal product replaces medical care.
- Short courses only: uva ursi leaf contains arbutin, which the body converts to hydroquinone. Use this blend for no more than one week at a time and no more than five courses a year. Do not use it if you have kidney disease.
- Age: not for anyone under 18.
- Pregnancy / nursing: do not use.
- Diuretics and blood pressure: corn silk and couch grass increase urine output, and corn silk may lower potassium and blood pressure. Consult your doctor if you take diuretics, blood-pressure medicine or corticosteroids.
- Blood sugar: corn silk and marshmallow may lower blood sugar - monitor if you take diabetes medication.
- Blood thinners: corn silk is rich in vitamin K, which can change how warfarin works.
- Medication timing: marshmallow mucilage can slow the absorption of medicines - take this blend at least two hours apart from any medication.
- Allergies: avoid if you are allergic to corn or corn pollen, grass pollen, or mallow-family plants. Uva ursi may give urine a harmless greenish-brown tint.
