Important safety information - please read before use

Holy basil is generally low in toxicity, but it has several specific cautions.

  • Fertility: studies (mostly in animals) suggest holy basil may lower sperm count and quality, so avoid it if you or your partner are trying to conceive.
  • Blood clotting: it contains eugenol and has a mild blood-thinning (antiplatelet) effect. If you take blood-thinning or anti-clotting medicines (such as warfarin, aspirin or clopidogrel), have a bleeding disorder, or are due to have surgery or dental work, consult your practitioner first.
  • Blood sugar: holy basil can lower blood sugar, so it may not suit people prone to low blood sugar; if you take diabetes medicines (such as sulfonylureas, insulin or GLP-1 drugs) it could push your blood sugar too low - monitor carefully and consult your doctor.
  • Pregnancy / nursing: safety data are lacking, so do NOT use it during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
  • Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Do not give it to infants or young children. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions about Vana Holy Basil Extract
What is Vana Holy Basil / Vana Tulsi (Ocimum gratissimum) leaf extract?
Vana holy basil is a liquid extract of the dried leaf of Ocimum gratissimum, one of the traditional tulsi (holy basil) types, known as Vana Tulsi or "wild forest tulsi," and also called clove basil or tree basil; it is a plant of the Lamiaceae (mint) family. This alcohol-free version is a vegetable-glycerin glycerite. A note on the name: the label shows "Ocimum sp." (meaning an unspecified Ocimum), but Vana Tulsi is specifically Ocimum gratissimum. Holy basil is generally low in toxicity, but it has several specific cautions - around fertility, blood clotting and blood sugar - explained in the safety section. It is a different species from the more common Holy Basil (Ocimum tenuiflorum) and from culinary sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum).
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Ocimum gratissimum leaf; only the solvent differs. This alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, giving a milder carrier for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a concentrated extract with a long shelf life. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format. The leaf inside is identical. Please follow the safety notes for both.
What is the difference between Vana Tulsi, Holy Basil and sweet basil?
They are three different plants in the same genus (Ocimum), so it helps to be clear. Vana Tulsi - ours - is Ocimum gratissimum, the "wild forest" tulsi (also called clove or tree basil). The more familiar Holy Basil (or Rama/Krishna tulsi) is a different species, Ocimum tenuiflorum (also written Ocimum sanctum), which we list separately. And ordinary culinary sweet basil is Ocimum basilicum, again a separate species. All are aromatic mints, but they differ in chemistry, aroma and traditional use, so they are not interchangeable. Our label of "Ocimum sp." simply means it had not been given its species name; the correct one for Vana Tulsi is Ocimum gratissimum. We identify it clearly so it is not confused with the other two.
How do I use Vana Holy Basil liquid extract?
Shake well first. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. The alcohol-free glycerite has a milder carrier. Do not exceed the suggested serving. Because of the fertility, blood-thinner and blood-sugar cautions below, please read the safety information before use. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
