REFRESHING WATERMELON
Watermelon associate with summer, holiday, traveling and sunny weather.
This fruit is not only sugar and water, it is a nutrient food which contain high levels of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and a small number of calories. These include significant amounts of vitamin C, calcium, magnesium, fiber, protein, large amount of potassium, vitamin A, vitamin B6, niacin, thiamin and many others.
Watermelon belongs to botanical family Cucurbitaceae. It botanical name is Citrullus Lanatus. Native to Africa and Asia. There are five common types of watermelon:
- Seeded
- Seedless
- Mini
- Yellow
- Orange
Interesting facts:
The Japanese grow square watermelons. They place the growing fruit inside square boxes and the fruit takes the shape of the container as it grows.
The watermelon rind is entirely edible.
The protein in watermelon seeds contains several amino acids.
The seeds also maintain the nervous and digestive systems and skin health.
Watermelon smoothies are a great way to get fiber and refreshing drink in a hot day:
You need:
- 2 cups frozen watermelon
- 1 cup water
- 1 tablespoon of honey
- a few mint leaves
Blend the watermelon and the water until smooth. Add the honey and mint and blend another 10-20 seconds.
Serve and enjoy!
Watermelon and Feta Salad
You need:
- 400 g watermelon
- 100 g feta cheese
- 1 bunch of fresh mint
- juice of 1/2 lime
- extra virgin olive oil
- salt
Cut the watermelon into chunks, discarding the peel. Crumble the feta, chop mint.
Place it all into a bowl and combine. Drizzle over an oil and lime juice, season with salt.
