Frequently Asked Questions about Bai Xian Pi Extract
What is Bai Xian Pi (Dictamnus albus) root bark extract?
Bai Xian Pi is a liquid extract of the dried root bark of Dictamnus albus, a plant of the Rutaceae (citrus) family; in traditional Chinese practice this root bark is called Bai Xian Pi (Cortex Dictamni). The Chinese pharmacopoeial source is the closely related Dictamnus dasycarpus. This alcohol-free version is a vegetable-glycerin glycerite, cold-macerated from root bark responsibly sourced from China and prepared in the USA. IMPORTANT: this herb has been linked to liver injury - please read the safety notes below carefully before use.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Bai Xian Pi root bark; only the solvent differs. This alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, giving it a milder taste that suits those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The tincture uses organic alcohol, the classic cold-maceration method that yields a more concentrated extract. The botanical inside is identical, and the same safety notes apply to both - please read them before use.
Is this the same as dittany of Crete or burning bush?
No. Our plant is Dictamnus albus, sometimes called white dittany, gas plant or fraxinella. It is not dittany of Crete, which is Origanum dictamnus, a culinary and aromatic herb of the mint family. And although Dictamnus albus is sometimes nicknamed burning bush, it is not the ornamental burning bush (Euonymus). The part we use is the root bark. We label ours clearly as Dictamnus albus (Cortex Dictamni).
How do I use Bai Xian Pi liquid extract?
Bai Xian Pi should be used only under the guidance of a qualified practitioner, and not for long periods, because of the liver-safety concern described below. If used, a typical amount is about 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml) in 2 oz of water, or as directed by your practitioner. Do not exceed the suggested serving. Read the safety information below before use.
Is Bai Xian Pi safe? Important safety information.
Please read this carefully. Bai Xian Pi (Dictamnus) has been linked to liver injury (hepatotoxicity) in reported cases. This reaction appears to be idiosyncratic - meaning it can happen unpredictably in susceptible people and is not simply a matter of taking too much - so it is best used only under the guidance of a qualified practitioner, for short periods, and not at all if you have any liver condition or take other medicines that can affect the liver. Stop use immediately and seek medical care if you notice signs such as yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools, unusual tiredness, nausea, or pain in the upper-right abdomen. The plant can also increase sensitivity to sunlight, so avoid strong sun exposure while using it. Do NOT use during pregnancy or while nursing. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
