Benzoin (Styrax Benzoin) is a tree which originated in Laos and Vietnam, but now grows in and around Malaysia, Java and Sumatra. It grows to a height of about 20 m (66 ft). The leaves are oval and hairy; the flowers are fleshy, greenish yellow in color. Benzoin is the gum resin which exudes from the bark after tapping and the trees can apparently produce resin in this way for about 15 to 20 years.*

The best way to use liquid herbal tinctures is to put the suggested amount in a glass of water, tea, or juice and drink the entire contents. Tinctures can also be administered directly into the mouth without the assistance of water however some tinctures are unpalatable which is why most people prefer to dilute them into a beverage.

What is Benzoin (Styrax benzoin) gum resin?

Benzoin is a fragrant balsamic resin, a gum collected from the bark of Styrax benzoin trees native to Southeast Asia. When the bark is wounded, the tree exudes a resin that hardens; this aromatic resin is called gum benzoin or gum benjamin, and it has been used for centuries as incense and in perfumery. The part used here is the gum resin. Our product is offered in two forms - a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite - each from ethically sourced raw material. This is a whole-resin liquid extract that carries the resin's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part.

What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?

Both are liquid extracts of the same Styrax benzoin gum resin; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the resin's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.

Is this the same as the chemical benzoin, friar's balsam, or spicebush?

No to all three - the name "benzoin" is shared by several very different things, so this is worth clarifying. First, there is a laboratory chemical also called benzoin (an organic compound used in chemistry); our product is not that - it is the natural tree resin. Second, there is compound benzoin tincture, also known as friar's balsam, which is a topical skin product; ours is different - it is a botanical liquid extract of the resin, not that skin preparation. Third, there is a North American shrub called spicebush, Lindera benzoin (sometimes "Benjamin bush"); that is an entirely different plant. Our product is specifically the gum resin of Styrax benzoin. We label it clearly by botanical name (Styrax benzoin) and plant part (gum resin) so there is no confusion with the chemical, the skin product, or the spicebush.
