Frequently Asked Questions about Black Garlic Extract
What is Black Garlic (Allium sativum)?
Black garlic is ordinary garlic, botanically Allium sativum, that has been slowly aged. Over several weeks under gentle, controlled warmth and humidity, the cloves gradually turn soft, dark, and sweet, developing a mellow, molasses-like, umami flavor with none of the sharp bite or strong odor of raw garlic. In Chinese, garlic is called Da Suan. The part used here is the bulb, in powder form. Because black garlic is prized as a gourmet food and is easy to enjoy, it has become popular both in cooking and as a supplement. The aging process changes its composition, increasing certain compounds such as S-allyl cysteine. Our extract is offered in two forms - a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite - each from carefully sourced raw material. This is a whole-bulb liquid extract that carries the black garlic's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same black garlic (Allium sativum) bulb; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the black garlic's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
Is black garlic a different plant from regular garlic?
No - and this is the most common question. Black garlic is the very same plant as ordinary garlic, Allium sativum. It becomes black through aging: fresh garlic is held under warmth and humidity for weeks, which slowly darkens the cloves, softens their texture, mellows their flavor, and increases certain compounds such as S-allyl cysteine. So it is not a different species or a dyed product - just regular garlic transformed by aging and time. A couple of other clarifications: there is an ornamental flower called Allium nigrum that is sometimes nicknamed "black garlic," but our product is the aged culinary garlic, not that plant; and black garlic is also different from elephant garlic (Allium ampeloprasum), which is a relative of the leek. We label our product clearly by botanical name (Allium sativum) and plant part (bulb) so there is no confusion.
How do I use Black Garlic liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. See the safety note below. Drink the entire contents.
Is Black Garlic extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Black garlic is a food and is generally well tolerated, but a few notes apply. Garlic, including black garlic, may have a blood-thinning effect, so use caution if you take an anticoagulant or antiplatelet medication such as warfarin or aspirin, and stop using it before any surgery. Garlic may also lower blood pressure and blood sugar, so use caution if you take medication for either. Some people get mild digestive upset from garlic. If you are allergic to garlic or other allium plants, do not use it. If you are pregnant or nursing, take any other medication, or have a medical condition, also consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children, and do not exceed the suggested serving. Store this tincture in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
