Black Walnut (Juglans nigra) - Leaf, Alcohol-Free Liquid Extract (External Use Only)

This is an alcohol-free glycerite of the dried leaf of Juglans nigra, the Eastern black walnut, a North American tree of the Juglandaceae family. This product is intended for external (topical) use only - it is not to be taken internally. The leaf naturally contains tannins and juglone, a compound characteristic of walnuts.

  • Botanical name: Juglans nigra L. (Eastern black walnut; Juglandaceae)
  • Plant part: Dried leaf
  • Intended use: External use only - as a diluted skin or hair rinse, wash or compress. Do not swallow.
  • Also known as: black walnut, Eastern black walnut, American walnut
  • Extract type: Alcohol-free glycerite (vegetable glycerin), cold-macerated
  • Other ingredients: Vegetable glycerin, crystal clear purified water
  • Origin: Leaf responsibly sourced (USA); prepared in the USA. Gluten free.

This is the black walnut leaf. It is a different part from our Black Walnut Hull (the same tree), and a different plant from English walnut (Juglans regia) and Butternut (Juglans cinerea), which we sell separately - and it is the leaf, not the edible nut. Please read the external-use safety notes below.

External use only - important safety information, please read before use

For external (topical) use only. Do NOT take this product internally.

  • Patch test first: black walnut leaf contains juglone and tannins, which can irritate the skin - apply a small diluted amount to a small area first and wait 24 hours; stop use if any redness, itching or irritation occurs.
  • Staining: juglone is a natural brown dye and can stain skin, hair, nails and fabric - handle with care.
  • Where not to apply: do not apply to broken, irritated or sensitive skin, and keep it away from the eyes and mucous membranes.
  • Tree-nut allergy: black walnut is a tree-nut plant - do not use it, even on the skin, if you are allergic to walnuts or tree nuts.
  • Pregnancy / nursing: if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, ask a qualified healthcare practitioner before external use.
  • Keep out of reach of children; not for use on infants or young children. If irritation persists, discontinue use and consult a practitioner.

Frequently Asked Questions about Black Walnut Extract
What is Black Walnut (Juglans nigra) leaf extract, and how is it used?
Black walnut is a liquid extract of the dried leaf of Juglans nigra, the Eastern black walnut, a North American tree of the Juglandaceae family. This product is for EXTERNAL (topical) use only - it is not to be taken internally. This alcohol-free glycerite is used as a diluted skin or hair rinse, wash or compress. The leaf naturally contains tannins (astringent compounds) and juglone, a compound characteristic of walnuts. Two things are worth knowing: this is the black walnut leaf (Juglans nigra), a different part from our Black Walnut Hull (the same tree) and a different plant from English walnut (Juglans regia) and Butternut (Juglans cinerea), which we sell separately - and it is the leaf, not the edible nut; and because it contains juglone and tannins that can irritate or stain the skin, please read the external-use safety notes below.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are external liquid extracts of the same Juglans nigra leaf; only the solvent differs. This alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water, gentler on the skin for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water; the alcohol can sting or dry the skin, so dilute it well. Both are for external use only. Choose the glycerite for a gentler feel; choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format. The botanical inside is identical. Please follow the external-use safety notes for both.
Is black walnut leaf the same as the hull, English walnut or butternut?
No - several walnut products are easy to mix up, so it helps to be clear. This is the leaf of Juglans nigra, the black walnut. The black walnut hull (the green outer covering of the nut) is a different part of the same tree, which we sell separately as Black Walnut Hull - the hull is especially rich in juglone. English walnut is a different species, Juglans regia (the common edible walnut), and we offer its leaf separately. Butternut, or white walnut, is Juglans cinerea, and we offer its inner bark. All are in the walnut family (Juglandaceae) and share tree-nut and juglone characteristics, but they are different parts or species. And note this is the leaf, not the edible walnut kernel. We label ours clearly as black walnut (Juglans nigra) leaf so it is not confused with the hull, with English walnut, or with butternut.
How do I use Black Walnut leaf extract externally?
This product is for external use only - do not swallow it. Shake well first, then dilute it in water before use (for example as a skin or hair rinse, wash or compress). Always patch test first: apply a small diluted amount to a small area of skin and wait 24 hours before wider use. Avoid broken, irritated or sensitive skin, and keep it away from the eyes. Note that juglone can stain skin, hair, nails and fabric, so handle with care. Please read the external-use safety information below before use. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is Black Walnut leaf safe? External-use safety information.
Please read this carefully. This product is for external (topical) use only - do NOT take it internally. Skin irritation: black walnut leaf contains juglone and tannins that can irritate the skin, so always patch test first and stop use if redness, itching or irritation occurs; do not apply it to broken, irritated or sensitive skin or near the eyes. Staining: juglone is a natural brown dye and can stain skin, hair, nails and fabric. Tree-nut allergy: black walnut is a tree-nut plant, so do not use it, even on the skin, if you are allergic to walnuts or tree nuts. Pregnancy and nursing: if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, ask a qualified healthcare practitioner before external use. Keep out of reach of children and do not use it on infants or young children. If irritation persists, discontinue use and consult a qualified healthcare practitioner. This alcohol-free glycerite is best refrigerated after opening. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
