Frequently Asked Questions about Cang Zhu Extract
What is Cang Zhu (Atractylodes lancea) rhizome extract?
Cang Zhu is a liquid extract of the dried rhizome of Atractylodes lancea, an aromatic plant of the daisy family (Asteraceae) known in traditional Chinese herbalism as Cang Zhu, or Swordlike (Black) Atractylodes. One important point of clarity: the correct genus is Atractylodes, NOT Atractylis - "Atractylis" is a separate, unrelated group of Mediterranean thistles (see below). This alcohol-free version is a vegetable-glycerin glycerite. It is a whole-rhizome liquid extract carrying the rhizome's natural aromatic constituents, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and it is meant to be taken internally by the drop. The raw material is responsibly sourced and each batch is gluten free. Please read the safety notes below.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Atractylodes lancea rhizome; only the solvent differs. This alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water, giving it a milder taste that suits those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The tincture uses organic alcohol at 48% by volume with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format. The botanical inside is identical.
Is this Atractylis? And how is it different from Bai Zhu?
Two important distinctions. First, this is Atractylodes, NOT Atractylis. Atractylodes lancea (Cang Zhu) is the Chinese herb; Atractylis is a completely separate and unrelated genus of Mediterranean thistles - one of them, Atractylis gummifera, is a well-known toxic plant, so the spelling matters. Our product is the Chinese herb Atractylodes lancea, not any Atractylis species. Second, Cang Zhu is different from Bai Zhu: Bai Zhu is Atractylodes macrocephala, a related species in the same genus, but the two are used differently - a traditional saying is "Bai Zhu tonifies, Cang Zhu drains." Cang Zhu (this one) is the more aromatic, drying form; Bai Zhu is the more tonifying form. We sell both, labeled by botanical name and plant part so there is no confusion.
How do I use Cang Zhu / Atractylodes rhizome liquid extract?
Shake well before use. The suggested serving for adults is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water or juice, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Cang Zhu has a warm, aromatic, slightly bitter character. Because it is alcohol free, this glycerite can be taken directly or added to a cool drink. Do not exceed the suggested serving, and see the safety notes below. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is Cang Zhu right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Cang Zhu (Atractylodes lancea) is well tolerated - there are no reports of toxicity or serious adverse reactions when it is used at the usual recommended amounts, so it is considered low in toxicity. One caution: high doses can cause disturbances of the nervous system such as dizziness and headache, so keep to the suggested serving and do not exceed it. As a general precaution with a concentrated aromatic extract, consult a healthcare practitioner before use during pregnancy or nursing, and if you take any medication or have a medical condition. (Note: this is Atractylodes lancea, not the unrelated toxic thistle Atractylis gummifera.) Keep out of reach of children. This alcohol-free glycerite is best refrigerated after opening. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
