Frequently Asked Questions about Bayberry Extract
What is Bayberry Root Bark (Myrica cerifera) extract?
Bayberry root bark extract is a dietary supplement made from the dried root bark of Myrica cerifera, the Southern bayberry, an aromatic evergreen shrub of the family Myricaceae also known as Southern wax myrtle or candleberry. Our extract is made specifically from the root bark and is offered in two forms: a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite, each prepared from ethically sourced, wild-harvested raw material. This is a whole-bark liquid extract that carries the bark's natural spectrum of constituents, including its tannins - it is not an isolated or standardized single-compound product. We label the product by its botanical name and plant part so it is clear this is the root bark of Myrica cerifera, distinct from the plant's wax and from other plants called bayberry.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Myrica cerifera root bark; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses a traditional blend of vegetable glycerine, alcohol and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal-clear water, which suits those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture if you prefer a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
Is this bayberry candles, the shrub, or Chinese bayberry?
None of those. Bayberry is famous for the fragrant wax obtained from its berries, which is used to make bayberry candles and scents, but our product is a herbal extract of the ROOT BARK, not the wax, the berry, or a candle. The same plant, Myrica cerifera, is also grown as an ornamental Southern wax myrtle used for hedges and landscaping; our product is the root bark supplement, not the garden shrub. It is also different from the Chinese bayberry (Myrica rubra, sometimes called yangmei or yumberry), which is a separate species eaten as a red fruit. And bayberry is not the same as the culinary bay leaf or bay laurel (Laurus nobilis). We label the product clearly by its botanical name and plant part so there is no confusion between bayberry root bark, bayberry wax and candles, the wax myrtle shrub, Chinese bayberry, and bay leaf.
How do I use Bayberry Root Bark liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents. Do not exceed the suggested serving size.
Is Bayberry Root Bark extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Bayberry root bark is rich in tannins, so taking more than the suggested amount may cause stomach upset or nausea, and tannins can reduce the absorption of iron and some minerals if taken with meals - so it is best not to exceed the suggested serving size and to keep use to shorter periods. Bayberry also contains a compound (myricadiol) that may affect the body's sodium and potassium balance, so if you have high blood pressure, heart or kidney concerns, or take related medication, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. It is best avoided during pregnancy and nursing. If you take any prescription medication or are managing a health condition, consult a practitioner first. Keep out of reach of children. Store this tincture in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

Our Bayberry (Myrica Cerifera) Root Bark is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.
METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION
Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.
