Frequently Asked Questions about Caralluma Extract
What is Caralluma (Caralluma adscendens)?
Caralluma is an edible succulent plant of the family Apocynaceae - the dogbane and milkweed family - botanically Caralluma adscendens, of which the well-known form is the variety fimbriata (Caralluma adscendens var. fimbriata). It grows in the arid regions of India and has thick, four-angled fleshy green stems that branch at the base, giving it a cactus-like look, though it is not a true cactus. The part used is the above-ground succulent stem. In its native regions caralluma has long been eaten as a vegetable and pickle and carried as a food on journeys. Our raw material is sourced in India. The extract is offered in two forms, a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite. This is a whole-plant liquid extract carrying the plant's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized single compound, and it is not the trademarked branded extract sold under other names. We label it clearly by botanical name and plant part. Please read the safety section before use.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Caralluma adscendens plant; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, together with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the plant's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
Is caralluma a cactus, and what plant part is used?
No, caralluma is not a cactus, even though it looks like one. It is a stem succulent of the family Apocynaceae, the dogbane and milkweed family, so its resemblance to a cactus is a case of similar form in unrelated plants. The part used is the above-ground fleshy stem - the four-angled green stalks - which is the part traditionally eaten and used in India, not the root. You may see caralluma listed under the botanical name Caralluma adscendens, or by its variety name Caralluma fimbriata; these refer to the same plant. Our product is a liquid extract of the aerial stems of this plant. We label the botanical name and plant part on every page so it is clear which plant, and which part, you are getting.
How do I use Caralluma liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents. Do not exceed the suggested serving.
Is Caralluma extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Caralluma has a long history as an edible plant and is generally regarded as safe in food amounts, but a concentrated extract is a different matter, so please read this before use. Some people experience digestive side effects such as stomach upset, flatulence or constipation, and modern long-term safety data is limited, so do not exceed the suggested serving. Do not use this product during pregnancy or while nursing. It is not intended for young children. If you take any medication or are managing a health condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use, and discontinue use and consult your practitioner if any adverse reaction occurs. Keep out of reach of children. Store this tincture in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
