Frequently Asked Questions about Caraway Extract
What is Caraway (Carum carvi)?
Caraway is a classic culinary spice from the carrot or parsley family (Apiaceae), botanically Carum carvi. The part used here is the fruit - the small, curved, ridged "seeds" familiar from rye bread, sauerkraut, cheeses, and spice blends. This is a whole-seed liquid extract, offered in two forms - an alcohol-free glycerite and a traditional alcohol-based tincture - each from carefully sourced raw material. Its warm, slightly sweet aroma comes mostly from a compound called carvone. It is worth knowing that caraway is often confused with cumin, which is a different spice from a different plant, and that this product is caraway (Carum carvi). This is a whole-seed extract that carries the spice's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated compound and not the essential oil, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Carum carvi fruit; only the solvent differs. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, with vegetable glycerin and water. Both deliver the spice's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life. See the safety note below.
Is caraway the same as cumin, fennel, or black cumin?
No, although they are easy to mix up. Caraway (Carum carvi) is frequently confused with cumin (Cuminum cyminum), because their seeds look similar - both are small, ridged, and crescent-shaped - but they come from different plants and taste quite different, caraway being warmer and a little minty and cumin being earthier. In some languages the names even overlap, which adds to the confusion, but our product is caraway, Carum carvi. Caraway is also different from other Apiaceae spices such as fennel, anise, and dill, and it is completely different from black cumin or nigella (Nigella sativa), an unrelated plant sometimes loosely called "caraway." Our product is a supplement extract of the whole caraway seed, not the culinary spice jar and not caraway essential oil. We label it clearly by botanical name (Carum carvi) and plant part (fruit) so there is no confusion.
How do I use Caraway liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 3 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. See the safety note below. Drink the entire contents.
Is Caraway extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Caraway is a widely used culinary spice and is generally well tolerated, but a concentrated extract has a few considerations. If you are pregnant or nursing, it is best to consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before using a concentrated extract, since culinary spices are sometimes used more cautiously in medicinal amounts during pregnancy. Because caraway is in the carrot or parsley family (Apiaceae), use caution if you are allergic to related plants such as carrot, celery, or fennel. Some people may notice mild stomach upset with concentrated extracts, so do not exceed the suggested serving. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, also consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. This alcohol-free glycerite is best refrigerated after opening. Discontinue use and consult your practitioner if any adverse reaction occurs. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
