What is Luo Bu Ma, Rafuma (Apocynum venetum)?

Luo Bu Ma is the leaf of Apocynum venetum, a hardy perennial of the family Apocynaceae. In traditional Chinese herbalism it is called Luo Bu Ma; it is also widely known as Rafuma, kendir, and by the English names Venetian dogbane or sword-leaf dogbane. The plant grows wild across the saline and desert soils of Central and East Asia, and the part used here is the dried leaf, traditionally taken as a tea. Our raw material is sourced in China. The extract is offered in two forms, an alcohol-free glycerite and a traditional alcohol-based tincture. This is a whole-leaf liquid extract carrying the leaf's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized single compound, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part. Because "dogbane" covers several different and some toxic plants, please read the identity and safety notes below so you have the right one.

What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?

Both are liquid extracts of the same Apocynum venetum leaf; only the solvent differs. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, together with vegetable glycerin and water. Both deliver the leaf's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life.

Is this the same as "dogbane" or Indian hemp?

Not the toxic ones - and this distinction matters. Our product is Apocynum venetum, the Eurasian species whose leaf is traditionally used as luobuma tea; its clearest names are Luo Bu Ma and Rafuma. The word "dogbane," however, is used for the whole Apocynum genus and the wider family, and that includes plants you should not confuse this with. In particular, Apocynum cannabinum - called American dogbane or "Indian hemp" - is a different, notably toxic species that is not used as a supplement. So when you see a bare "dogbane," check the botanical name. Two more clarifications: "Indian hemp" here refers to Apocynum cannabinum and has nothing to do with cannabis or marijuana; and although luobuma is also grown as a fiber plant (kendir), the fiber use is separate from this leaf extract.
