California Poppy and Lavender Alcohol-Free Drops

This is an alcohol-free liquid extract (glycerite) of two herbs extracted together in equal parts and named for its ingredients: the orange wildflower of the American West and the violet flower spikes of lavender - here the large-flowered hybrid lavandin, Lavandula x intermedia. Both are also sold on their own. It is a traditional herbal product - it causes drowsiness and is for adults only - please read the safety information below before use.

  • California poppy, aerial parts - Eschscholzia californica aerial parts (Papaveraceae)
  • Lavender (lavandin), flower - Lavandula x intermedia flower (Lamiaceae)
  • Extract type: Alcohol-free glycerite - liquid drops. Other ingredients: vegetable glycerin, purified water
  • Origin: Responsibly sourced, cultivated botanicals. Gluten free. Made in the USA.

What is in the blend

  • California poppy - the bright orange annual that carpets Californian hillsides each spring; the whole flowering herb is used. It belongs to the poppy family but is a different genus from the opium poppy and contains no opium.
  • Lavandin flower - the flower spikes of a natural hybrid of English lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) and spike lavender, the tall, vigorous lavender of the Provence fields. Lavandin has a sharper scent and noticeably more camphor than English lavender, which is why this blend is for adults only. We also sell English lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) flower on its own.

Why the alcohol-free drops

The two dried herbs are extracted together in vegetable glycerin and purified water, so there is no ethanol in the bottle - the version to choose if you avoid alcohol. Glycerin gives the drops a mild, naturally sweet taste that softens the bitter, camphor-like note of the herbs.

What is a glycerite?

A glycerite is a liquid herbal extract made with vegetable glycerin instead of alcohol. Glycerin is a clear, naturally sweet liquid from plant oils; it extracts and preserves the water-soluble parts of the herbs. Because glycerin is a weaker preservative than alcohol, keep the bottle refrigerated after opening. The glycerin and water percentages are printed on the label.

How to use

Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a little water, juice or tea and drink it, up to the frequency shown on the label. Do not exceed the label serving. Do not drive or operate machinery after taking it. Refrigerate after opening and use within the period printed on the label.

Drops or tincture?

If you prefer the classic alcohol-based extract with the longest shelf life at room temperature, the same two-herb blend is available as California Poppy and Lavender Tincture - the alcohol-based version. The herbs and proportions are identical; only the extraction liquid differs.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is California Poppy and Lavender Alcohol-Free Drops?
This is a two-herb liquid blend named for its ingredients: California poppy aerial parts (Eschscholzia californica) and lavender flower - specifically lavandin (Lavandula x intermedia), the large-flowered hybrid lavender grown across Provence - extracted together in equal parts in vegetable glycerin and purified water, with no alcohol. California poppy is the orange wildflower of the American West; lavandin is a fragrant Mediterranean shrub with long violet flower spikes. Each is also sold on its own. It is an herbal glycerite, not a capsule. It is a botanical product and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Please read the safety note below - this blend causes drowsiness and is not for children.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free drops and the tincture?
Both contain the same two herbs in the same proportions; only the extraction liquid differs. These drops are a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water - no alcohol, a milder and naturally sweet taste that softens the bitter, camphor-like note of the herbs, best kept refrigerated after opening. The tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic method with the longest shelf life at room temperature. Choose whichever suits you; the safety notes apply to both.
Which lavender is this? Is California poppy related to the opium poppy?
The lavender in this blend is lavandin, Lavandula x intermedia, a natural hybrid of English lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) and spike lavender. Lavandin has larger flowers, a sharper scent and noticeably more camphor than English lavender, which is why this blend is not for children. We also sell English lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) and lavandin as single extracts. California poppy belongs to the poppy family but to a different genus from the opium poppy (Papaver somniferum); it contains no opium and none of the opium alkaloids.
