California Poppy and Passionflower Tincture

This is an alcohol-based liquid extract (tincture) of two North American herbs extracted together in equal parts. The blend is named for its two ingredients; both are also sold on their own. Both herbs can cause drowsiness - please read the safety information below before use.

  • California poppy, aerial parts - Eschscholzia californica flowering herb (Papaveraceae) - not the opium poppy; contains no opiates
  • Passion flower, herb - Passiflora incarnata leaf and stem (Passifloraceae) - the maypop vine
  • Extract type: Alcohol tincture. Other ingredients: organic alcohol, vegetable glycerin, crystal clear purified water
  • Origin: Responsibly sourced, cultivated botanicals. Gluten free. Made in the USA.

What is in the blend

  • California poppy - the bright orange annual that carpets Californian hillsides each spring; the whole flowering herb is used. It belongs to the poppy family but is a different genus from the opium poppy and contains no opium.
  • Passion flower - the maypop, a climbing vine of the southeastern United States with intricate purple-fringed flowers and egg-shaped fruit; the leafy stems are used, gathered when the plant is in flower.

Why a tincture

The two dried herbs are macerated together in organic alcohol with a little vegetable glycerin and water - the classic herbal method. A tincture keeps for years at room temperature in a cool, dark place, has a sharp, bitter, grassy taste, and a few drops disappear in a glass of water or juice. A serving of 20 to 30 drops is roughly 1 ml of liquid, so the amount of alcohol per serving is small.

How to use

Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a little water or juice and drink it, up to the frequency shown on the label. Do not exceed the label serving. It may cause drowsiness - do not drive or operate machinery after taking it, and do not combine it with alcohol. Store in a cool, dark place with the cap tight.

Tincture or drops?

If you avoid alcohol or prefer a milder taste, the same two-herb blend is available as California Poppy and Passionflower Alcohol-Free Drops - the glycerite version. The herbs and proportions are identical; only the extraction liquid differs.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is California Poppy and Passionflower Tincture?
California Poppy and Passionflower is a two-herb liquid blend: California poppy aerial parts (Eschscholzia californica, the flowering herb) and passion flower herb (Passiflora incarnata, the leaf and stem of the vine), extracted together in equal parts in organic alcohol with a little vegetable glycerin and water. The blend is named for its two ingredients - two North American plants with a long tradition in evening use; both are also sold on their own. It is a liquid herbal tincture, not a capsule. It is a botanical product and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Please read the safety note below - both herbs can cause drowsiness, and this blend is not suitable for everyone.
What is the difference between the tincture and the alcohol-free drops?
Both contain the same two herbs in the same proportions; only the extraction liquid differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water - the classic method with the longest shelf life at room temperature and a sharp, bitter, grassy taste. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, milder and naturally sweet, for those who avoid alcohol. Choose whichever suits you; the safety notes apply to both.
Is California poppy related to the opium poppy? How is this blend different from California Poppy and Valerian?
California poppy (Eschscholzia californica) belongs to the poppy family but is not the opium poppy (Papaver somniferum): it contains no opium and no opiates such as morphine or codeine, and it is legal to grow and sell. Its alkaloids are different compounds, and the whole flowering herb - not the seed pod - is used. Passion flower is the maypop vine of the southeastern United States, unrelated to the poppy. Our other evening pairs are California Poppy and Valerian (poppy with valerian root) and Wild Lettuce and California Poppy, and Sleep Support is a four-herb blend without poppy. Compare the ingredient lists and choose the combination you prefer; all of them can cause drowsiness.
