Frequently Asked Questions about Echinacea Extract
What is Echinacea (Echinacea purpurea) herb extract?
Echinacea is a flowering perennial of the daisy or aster family (Asteraceae), native to North America, botanically Echinacea purpurea and commonly known as the purple coneflower for its distinctive raised, cone-shaped flower center. It is one of the most familiar herbs in the world. The part used here is the herb, meaning the aerial parts of the plant - the leaf, stem, and flower. Our extract is offered in two forms - an alcohol-free glycerite and a traditional alcohol-based tincture - each from ethically sourced raw material. The aerial parts naturally contain constituents such as alkylamides and polysaccharides. This is a whole-herb liquid extract that carries the plant's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Echinacea purpurea herb; only the solvent differs. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, with vegetable glycerin and water. Both deliver the herb's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life.
Is this the herb or the root, and which echinacea species is it?
Two clarifications that matter with echinacea. First, part: this product is the herb - the aerial parts (leaf, stem, and flower). The root is also used in herbalism and is offered as a separate product, so if you want the root, choose that one. Second, species: our echinacea is Echinacea purpurea, one of three species commonly used, the others being Echinacea angustifolia and Echinacea pallida; these are related but distinct, so we identify ours specifically as E. purpurea. It is also worth noting that echinacea, or purple coneflower, is a very popular garden ornamental; our product is the herbal extract, not a plant for the garden. We label our product clearly by botanical name (Echinacea purpurea) and plant part (herb) so there is no confusion with the root, the other species, or the ornamental plant.
How do I use Echinacea herb liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents.
Is Echinacea extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Echinacea is not right for everyone. Because it is in the daisy family (Asteraceae) and is a known plant allergen, people who are allergic to plants such as ragweed, daisies, marigolds, or chrysanthemums may also react to it, so use caution if you have these sensitivities. If you have an autoimmune condition or take medication that suppresses the immune system, talk with your practitioner before use. Echinacea is traditionally used for short periods rather than continuously. If you are pregnant or nursing, take any other medication, or have a medical condition, also consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children, and do not exceed the suggested serving. Store as directed on the label. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration.
