Echinacea (Echinacea purpurea), the purple coneflower, is a perennial of the daisy family, Asteraceae, native to open woods, prairies, and roadsides of the central and eastern United States from Ohio and Iowa south to Georgia and Louisiana, and one of the most planted native wildflowers in American gardens. It grows 60 to 120 centimeters with stiff, bristly stems and rough, coarsely toothed oval leaves, and from midsummer carries large flower heads whose pink-purple rays droop slightly around a spiny, domed, orange-brown cone; the Greek name refers to a hedgehog. The root is dark and fibrous with a tingling, faintly sweet taste. We extract the dried herb and root separately.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
