What is Long Dan Cao / Chinese Gentian (Gentiana manshurica) extract?
Long Dan Cao extract is a dietary supplement made from the dried root of Gentiana manshurica, a gentian in the family Gentianaceae. In traditional Chinese herbalism the root is called Long Dan Cao, which translates literally as dragon gall herb - a name that reflects how intensely bitter it is - and in English it is known as Chinese gentian or Manchurian gentian. In pharmacopoeia texts the root appears as Radix Gentianae. Our extract is made from the root and is offered in two forms: a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite, each prepared from ethically sourced, wild-harvested raw material grown in China. This is a whole-root liquid extract that carries the root's natural spectrum of constituents - it is not an isolated or standardized single compound. We label the product by botanical name and plant part so it is clear which gentian this is.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Gentiana manshurica root; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses a traditional blend of vegetable glycerine, alcohol and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal-clear water, which suits those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture if you prefer a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
How is this different from European gentian, Qin Jiao, or gentian violet?
They are different things. Our product is Gentiana manshurica, the Chinese gentian known as Long Dan Cao. European gentian is Gentiana lutea, the yellow-flowered alpine species famous as the bitter behind aperitifs and digestive bitters; we sell it as its own separate product, and if you are looking for that classic European bitter, that is the one to choose. Qin Jiao is Gentiana macrophylla, yet another gentian used in Chinese herbalism with its own traditional character, also sold separately. It is worth knowing that Long Dan Cao is officially obtained from several closely related gentians - including Gentiana scabra and Gentiana triflora as well as our Gentiana manshurica - so we state our species explicitly on the label. Finally, gentian violet is not a plant at all: it is a synthetic dye that simply shares part of the name. We label every product by botanical name and plant part so there is no confusion.
How do I use Long Dan Cao liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents. Be aware that this is an exceptionally bitter herb, so diluting it well is advisable. The tincture and the alcohol-free glycerite are used the same way; choose the one that fits your preference.
Is Long Dan Cao extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
This is one of the most intensely bitter herbs used in herbal tradition, and strong bitters stimulate stomach secretions, so it is best avoided by anyone with a stomach ulcer, gastritis, or excess stomach acid, or used only under the guidance of a practitioner. As with any concentrated herbal extract, it is best not to exceed the suggested serving size. Use during pregnancy and nursing only under the supervision of a practitioner. Excessive amounts may affect alertness, so use care when driving or operating machinery. If you take any prescription medication or are managing a health condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use, and it is wise to consult a practitioner trained in traditional Chinese herbs before combining it with other herbs.
