What is Bergamot Mint (Mentha citrata) extract?
Bergamot Mint is a liquid extract of the dried flowering tops of Mentha citrata, a citrus-scented mint of the Lamiaceae family, also known as eau de Cologne mint, lemon mint or orange mint. Unlike peppermint, its aroma comes from linalool and linalyl acetate rather than menthol, which gives it a soft, bergamot-like, citrusy scent. Botanically it is often treated as a form of peppermint (Mentha x piperita f. citrata) or of water mint (Mentha aquatica var. citrata). This tincture is cold-macerated in organic alcohol from flowering tops responsibly sourced and prepared in the USA. Please read the short safety note below.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Bergamot Mint flowering tops; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol, the classic cold-maceration method that yields a more concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The botanical inside is identical.
Is this the same as bergamot, wild bergamot or peppermint?
No - the name is shared by several unrelated plants. Ours is Bergamot Mint, a true mint (Mentha citrata). It is not Bergamot the citrus (Citrus bergamia, the bergamot orange used to flavor Earl Grey tea), and it is not Wild Bergamot (Monarda fistulosa, a bee balm). It is closely related to Peppermint (Mentha x piperita) - in fact it is a citrus-scented form of that mint - but it is a different, linalool-rich type rather than the menthol-rich peppermint, and different again from Spearmint (Mentha spicata) and Bo He (Mentha haplocalyx). We label ours clearly by its botanical name.
How do I use Bergamot Mint liquid extract?
Shake well first. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to a little water softens the taste. Do not exceed the suggested serving.
Is Bergamot Mint right for everyone? Safety information.
Bergamot Mint is a gentle aromatic mint and is considered low in toxicity. A couple of points are worth knowing. It naturally contains linalool, a fragrance compound that can cause skin or allergic reactions in sensitive people, so avoid it if you are sensitive to linalool or to plants of the mint family. Like other mints it may not suit everyone with acid reflux. As a general precaution, avoid use during pregnancy and while nursing unless advised by a qualified healthcare practitioner. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children.
