Qiang Huo (Notopterygium incisum) - Root, Alcohol-Free Liquid Extract

This is an alcohol-free (glycerite) liquid extract of the dried root and rhizome of Notopterygium incisum (notopterygium; Apiaceae family, endemic to China), known in traditional Chinese herbalism as Qiang Huo.

  • Botanical name: Notopterygium incisum Ting ex H.T.Chang
  • Plant part: Dried root and rhizome
  • Extract type: Alcohol-free vegetable-glycerin glycerite
  • Other ingredients: Vegetable glycerin, crystal clear purified water
  • Gluten free. Suggested use: 20-30 drops in 2 oz water

This is Qiang Huo (Notopterygium incisum) - a different plant from its traditional partner herb Du Huo (Angelica pubescens), which we sell separately. Responsibly and sustainably sourced. Please read the safety notes below.

Important safety information - please read before use

Sun sensitivity (photosensitivity). Qiang Huo root naturally contains furanocoumarins (such as bergapten and psoralen-type compounds). These are photosensitizing - they can make your skin react more strongly to sunlight or UV, which may cause a rash, redness or darkened patches on sun-exposed skin. While taking it, limit strong sun and tanning-bed exposure and use sun protection.

  • Photosensitizing medicines: use caution if you take other photosensitizing drugs (for example certain antibiotics, or psoralen treatments).
  • Dose: taking more than the suggested amount may cause nausea or vomiting - do not exceed the serving.
  • Do NOT use during pregnancy or while nursing.
  • If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use.
  • Keep out of reach of children. Refrigerate after opening.

Frequently Asked Questions about Qiang Huo Extract
What is Qiang Huo / notopterygium (Notopterygium incisum) root extract?
Qiang Huo is a liquid extract of the dried root and rhizome of Notopterygium incisum, a plant of the Apiaceae (carrot/parsley) family endemic to China, known in traditional Chinese herbalism as Qiang Huo. This alcohol-free version is a vegetable-glycerin glycerite. It is a whole-root liquid extract carrying the root's natural constituents, including coumarins such as notopterol and the furanocoumarins that this family is known for. Please note two things: this is Qiang Huo (Notopterygium incisum), a different plant from its traditional partner herb Du Huo (Angelica pubescens), which we sell separately; and because it contains furanocoumarins, it can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Please read the safety notes below.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Notopterygium incisum root; only the solvent differs. This alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water, giving it a milder taste that suits those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format. The botanical inside is identical. Please follow the safety notes for both, especially the note about sun sensitivity.
How is Qiang Huo different from Du Huo?
They are a classic traditional pair, and they are often confused. Qiang Huo is Notopterygium incisum, and Du Huo is Angelica pubescens - two different plants from two different genera, though both are in the carrot family (Apiaceae) and both are used traditionally for "wind-damp." In Chinese herbalism they are distinguished by area: Qiang Huo is associated with the upper body and head (for example the back of the neck and shoulders), while Du Huo is associated with the lower body. We sell both, and we label each by botanical name so they are not mixed up. Both also contain furanocoumarins, so the same sun-sensitivity caution applies to each. This product is specifically Qiang Huo (Notopterygium incisum).
How do I use Qiang Huo / notopterygium root liquid extract?
Shake well before use. The suggested serving for adults is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water or juice, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. The alcohol-free glycerite can be taken directly or added to a cool drink; for the alcohol tincture, adding it to a little water softens the taste. Do not exceed the suggested serving. Please read the safety information below before use, especially the sun-sensitivity note. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is Qiang Huo right for everyone? Safety information.
Please read this before use. Qiang Huo root naturally contains furanocoumarins (such as bergapten and psoralen-type compounds), which are "photosensitizing" - they can make your skin react more strongly to sunlight or UV, potentially causing a rash, redness or darkened patches on sun-exposed skin. While taking it, limit strong sun and tanning-bed exposure and use sun protection, and be cautious if you take other photosensitizing medicines (such as certain antibiotics or psoralen treatments). Taking more than the suggested amount may cause nausea or vomiting, so do not exceed the serving. Do NOT use during pregnancy or while nursing. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. This alcohol-free glycerite is best refrigerated after opening. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
