Frequently Asked Questions about Stinging Nettle Extract
What is stinging nettle root extract used for?
Stinging nettle root extract is a dietary supplement made from the dried root of Urtica dioica, a perennial herb native to Europe, Asia, North America, and northern Africa. The root of Urtica dioica has been used for centuries in European traditional herbal practice. Unlike the leaf, which is used as a nutritive herb, the root contains a distinct set of compounds including lectins, polysaccharides, and plant sterols. As a dietary supplement, stinging nettle root extract is used to support general wellness and healthy urinary tract function. These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
What is the difference between stinging nettle root drops and stinging nettle root tincture?
HawaiiPharm offers stinging nettle root in two liquid formats. The alcohol-free glycerite drops use vegetable glycerin and purified water as solvents, making them suitable for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The stinging nettle root tincture uses grain alcohol as the primary solvent, which is the traditional method of herbal extraction. Both are made from the same dried Urtica dioica root.
What is the difference between stinging nettle root and stinging nettle leaf?
Stinging nettle root and stinging nettle leaf are two separate parts of the same plant, Urtica dioica, and are used differently in traditional herbal practice. The leaf is valued as a nutritive herb rich in iron, vitamins A, C, and K, and flavonoids such as quercetin, and has traditionally been used to support healthy inflammatory response. The root contains a different profile of compounds including lectins, polysaccharides, and plant sterols, and has traditionally been used to support urinary tract health. HawaiiPharm offers both stinging nettle leaf extract and stinging nettle root extract as separate dietary supplements.
How do I use stinging nettle root liquid extract?
The suggested use is 20-30 drops taken three times daily, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Add the drops to water, tea, or juice before consuming. Shake the bottle well before each use, as natural separation may occur. Store in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight. Do not exceed the suggested serving size unless directed by a healthcare professional.
Are there any precautions when taking stinging nettle root supplement?
Consult a healthcare provider before use if you take blood pressure medications, diuretics, or blood-thinning medications such as warfarin, as stinging nettle root may interact with these drugs. Stinging nettle root may affect blood sugar levels - monitor carefully if you take diabetes medications. Not recommended during pregnancy or nursing without prior medical advice. Do not use if you have kidney disease or a known allergy to plants in the Urticaceae family. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS

Our Stinging Nettle (Urtica Dioica) Root is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.

METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION

Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.

COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING

Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
  • Viscosity measurement
  • Refractometric analysis
