Frequently Asked Questions about San Leng Extract
What is San Leng / River Bulrush (Scirpus fluviatilis) root extract?
San Leng is the Chinese name for a root herb used in Chinese herbal tradition. The botanical name on our label is Scirpus fluviatilis, the river bulrush, a sedge of the Cyperaceae family (current botany files it as Bolboschoenus fluviatilis); the part used is the dried root, as stated on the label. This alcohol-free version is a vegetable-glycerin glycerite of the dried root. One point matters above all: San Leng is one of the strongest blood-moving herbs in Chinese medicine and is strictly not for use in pregnancy. There is also an identity note (see below): the classical pharmacopeial San Leng is a related plant. Please read the safety notes below carefully.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same root; only the solvent differs. This alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, giving a milder carrier for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a concentrated extract with a long shelf life. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format. The root inside is identical, and the same safety notes apply to both.
Which plant is San Leng - and how is it different from bur-reed and E Zhu?
A useful clarification. Classical San Leng in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia is Sparganium stoloniferum (Rhizoma Sparganii). Our label uses a related sedge, Scirpus fluviatilis (accepted name Bolboschoenus fluviatilis), which is a commercially encountered San Leng source; if the exact botanical source matters to you, please contact us. It is different from our Burr Reed product, which is Sparganium emersum, another related but distinct species. San Leng is also traditionally paired with E Zhu (Curcuma zedoaria) as a blood-moving duo, but E Zhu is a completely different plant (a ginger relative), which we list separately.
How do I use San Leng / River Bulrush liquid extract?
Because this is a strong blood-moving herb, use it only under the guidance of a qualified practitioner, do NOT exceed the suggested serving, and keep to short-term use. Shake well first. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. Do not use it if you are pregnant. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light and out of reach of children, and shake before each use.
Is San Leng right for everyone? Safety information.
Please read this carefully. Pregnancy: San Leng is strictly contraindicated in pregnancy - it is a strong blood-moving herb that can stimulate the uterus and has shown harmful effects on development in studies - so do NOT use it during pregnancy, and avoid it while breastfeeding. Bleeding: do not use it if you have heavy menstrual bleeding, a bleeding disorder, or anemia; because it moves the blood, use caution if you take blood-thinning or antiplatelet medication, or are approaching surgery, and consult your practitioner. Use only for short courses, and ideally under the guidance of a qualified practitioner. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Do not give it to infants or children. Store as directed on the label. Keep out of reach of children. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
