Important safety information - please read before use

Sicklepod (Jue Ming Zi) seed contains natural laxative anthraquinones. Please read these cautions carefully.

  • Laxative effect / not for long-term use: the seed contains anthraquinones (the same laxative compounds found in senna), so it stimulates the bowels and can cause cramps and loose stools. Do NOT use it for more than one to two weeks at a time - long-term or high-dose use can cause the bowels to stop working normally, lead to laxative dependence, and cause a harmless but abnormal darkening of the bowel lining (melanosis coli).
  • Diarrhea / loose stools: do not use it if you already have loose stools or diarrhea, as it will make them worse.
  • Blood pressure: it may lower blood pressure - use caution if you have low blood pressure or take blood-pressure medication.
  • Pregnancy / nursing: do NOT use it during pregnancy, and consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use if you are breastfeeding.
  • Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Do not give it to infants or young children. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions about Sicklepod Extract
What is Sicklepod / Jue Ming Zi (Senna obtusifolia) seed extract?
Sicklepod is a liquid extract of the dried seed of Senna obtusifolia, a plant of the Fabaceae (legume) family, known in traditional Chinese medicine as Jue Ming Zi (or cassia seed) and also called sickle senna, foetid cassia or coffee weed. You may also see it under the older botanical name Cassia obtusifolia - it is the same plant. This alcohol-free version is a vegetable-glycerin glycerite. One thing matters a great deal for safety: the seed contains natural anthraquinones (the same family of laxative compounds found in senna), so it has a laxative effect and is not for long-term use. It is a different plant from Avaram (Senna auriculata), from laxative senna (Senna alexandrina) and from cassia cinnamon (Cinnamomum cassia). Please read the safety notes below.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Senna obtusifolia seed; only the solvent differs. This alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, giving a milder carrier for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a concentrated extract with a long shelf life. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format. The seed inside is identical. Please follow the safety notes for both.
Is Sicklepod the same as Jue Ming Zi, Avaram, senna or cassia cinnamon?
Sicklepod and Jue Ming Zi are the same plant - Senna obtusifolia (older name Cassia obtusifolia) - so if you have seen it under either name, it is the same seed. But the "cassia/senna" group has many members that are NOT the same: Avaram is a different species, Senna auriculata (a South Indian tea plant, not a strong laxative); laxative "senna" is Senna alexandrina, which we also list; Chaksu is Cassia absus; and, confusingly, "cassia" can also mean cassia cinnamon, Cinnamomum cassia, a completely different plant (a cinnamon bark). Our sicklepod (Jue Ming Zi) is specifically the seed of Senna obtusifolia and, like true senna, contains laxative anthraquinones. We label it clearly so it is not confused with the others.
How do I use Sicklepod liquid extract?
Shake well first. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. Do not exceed the suggested serving. Very important: because it has a laxative effect, do NOT use it for more than one to two weeks at a time. The alcohol-free glycerite has a milder carrier. Because of the laxative, pregnancy and blood-pressure cautions below, please read the safety information before use. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is Sicklepod right for everyone? Safety information.
Please read this carefully. Laxative anthraquinones: sicklepod (Jue Ming Zi) seed contains natural anthraquinones, the same laxative compounds found in senna, so it stimulates the bowels and can cause cramps and loose stools. Blood pressure: it can lower blood pressure, so use caution if you have low blood pressure or take blood-pressure medication. Pregnancy and nursing: do NOT use it during pregnancy, and consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use if you are breastfeeding. Do not use it to self-treat constipation, eye, liver or blood-pressure problems - see a qualified doctor instead. Do not give it to infants or young children. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. Store as directed on the label.
