Quinoa a species of goosefoot (Chenopodium), is a grain crop grown primarily for its edible seeds. It is a pseudocereal rather than a true cereal, as it is not a member of the true grass family. As a chenopod, quinoa is closely related to species such as beetroots, spinach and tumbleweeds. As a member of the Amaranthaceae family, it is related to and resembles amaranth, which is also a pseudocereal. It is high in protein, lacks gluten, and is tolerant of dry soil.*

Frequently Asked Questions about Quinoa Extract
What is Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa) seed extract?
Quinoa is a liquid extract of the dried seed of Chenopodium quinoa, an Andean plant of the family Amaranthaceae often called a pseudocereal because its seeds are used like a grain. It is the same quinoa familiar as a food. This alcohol-free version is a vegetable-glycerin glycerite. It is a whole-seed liquid extract carrying the seed's natural spectrum of constituents, including the saponins that naturally coat the seed, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and it is meant to be taken internally by the drop. The raw material is grown in the USA, and each batch is gluten free with no added sugar. Please read the safety notes below before use.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Chenopodium quinoa seed; only the solvent differs. This alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water, giving it a naturally mild taste that suits those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The tincture uses organic alcohol at 48% by volume with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format. The botanical inside is identical.
Is this the same as the quinoa I cook, or as epazote?
It is the same plant as culinary quinoa, but prepared differently, and it is not epazote. Chenopodium quinoa is the quinoa you cook as a grain; our product is a liquid extract of that same seed, taken by the drop rather than cooked and eaten as a food. It is not a substitute for eating quinoa and it is not a protein supplement. It is also different from epazote, which is a related plant in the same genus, Chenopodium ambrosioides - an aromatic herb used in cooking and traditionally as an anti-parasitic, with its own distinct chemistry (it is not a food grain). We sell epazote as a separate product. So this page is specifically the quinoa seed extract of Chenopodium quinoa. We label each by botanical name and plant part so there is no mix-up between quinoa and epazote.
How do I use Quinoa seed liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Start low - begin with around 10 to 15 drops in 2 oz of water rather than a full dropper, because the natural saponins in quinoa seed can be a little harsh on some stomachs - then adjust as tolerated up to the suggested serving, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Because it is alcohol free, this glycerite can be taken directly or added to a cool drink. Do not exceed the suggested serving. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is Quinoa seed extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Quinoa is eaten as a food and is generally well tolerated, but a concentrated seed extract can behave a little differently. Quinoa seeds carry natural compounds called saponins on their coat, which can irritate the digestive tract in some people and cause mild stomach upset, so start with a small amount and do not exceed the suggested serving. Quinoa is also moderately high in oxalates, so if you are prone to calcium-oxalate kidney stones, use caution and check with your practitioner. As with any supplement, if you are pregnant or nursing, take medication, or have a medical condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. This alcohol-free glycerite is best refrigerated after opening. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
