Slippery Elm (Ulmus rubra) is the red elm, a medium-sized deciduous tree of the elm family, Ulmaceae, native to eastern and central North America from Quebec to Florida and Texas, where it grows on moist, rich bottomlands and lower slopes. It reaches 15 to 20 meters with a spreading crown, large, rough, double-toothed leaves that feel like sandpaper above, and clusters of small reddish flowers before the leaves. The reddish-brown inner bark is thick and fibrous and becomes slick and mucilaginous when moistened, which is the origin of the common name. We extract the dried bark.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
