Frequently Asked Questions about Guduchi Extract
What is Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia)?
Guduchi is a herbaceous climbing vine of the family Menispermaceae, the moonseed family, botanically Tinospora cordifolia, native to the tropical regions of the Indian subcontinent. It is one of the classic herbs of the Ayurvedic tradition and is known by several names: Guduchi in Sanskrit, Giloy in Hindi, and Amrita, as well as the English name heart-leaved moonseed, after its heart-shaped leaves. The part used here is the dried root; in Ayurveda both the stem and root of this vine are used. Our raw material is grown in India. The extract is offered in two forms, an alcohol-free glycerite and a traditional alcohol-based tincture. This is a whole-root liquid extract carrying the root's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized single compound, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part. One point of identity: this is Tinospora cordifolia; we separately offer Chinese Tinospora, which is a different species (Tinospora sinensis). Please read the safety section carefully before use.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Tinospora cordifolia root; only the solvent differs. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, together with vegetable glycerin and water. Both deliver the root's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life.
Is Guduchi the same as Giloy, and as Chinese Tinospora?
Guduchi and Giloy are two names for the same plant: Guduchi is the Sanskrit name and Giloy the Hindi name for Tinospora cordifolia, which is also called Amrita and, in English, heart-leaved moonseed. So if you have seen it called Giloy, that is this plant. Chinese Tinospora is a different matter: it is Tinospora sinensis, a related species in the same genus, and we offer it separately as its own product made from the twig. The two are relatives but different species with different traditional uses. Our Guduchi is Tinospora cordifolia, and we label the botanical name and plant part on every page so it is clear which species you are getting. This is a liquid extract of the dried root, not a juice or a powder.
How do I use Guduchi liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents. Do not exceed the suggested serving.
Is Guduchi extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Please read this carefully, because there is an important safety point with this herb. Guduchi, or Giloy, has been associated in medical reports with liver injury in some people, occasionally with autoimmune features, including cases documented in a nationwide study during a period of heavy use. For this reason, do not use this product if you have a liver condition or a history of liver disease, and stop use and seek medical advice promptly if you notice signs of liver trouble such as unusual fatigue, abdominal pain, dark urine, or yellowing of the skin or eyes. If you have an autoimmune condition, speak with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not use during pregnancy or while nursing. This product is not intended for young children. If you take any medication, consult your practitioner before use, and do not exceed the suggested serving. Keep out of reach of children. Store as directed on the label. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
