Frequently Asked Questions about Hai Feng Teng Extract
What is Hai Feng Teng / kadsura pepper stem (Piper kadsura) extract?
Hai Feng Teng - literally "sea wind vine" - is the Chinese name for the dried stem of Piper kadsura, a woody climbing vine of the pepper family (Piperaceae); in pharmacy it is Caulis Piperis Kadsurae, and in English it is called kadsura pepper stem or kadsura vine. This tincture is an alcohol extract of the dried stem, taken by the drop. It is regarded as non-toxic, but one caution matters: research suggests it can lower embryo implantation, so it is not to be used during pregnancy or if you are trying to conceive. Please read the safety notes below.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Piper kadsura stem; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The stem inside is identical, and the same safety notes apply to both.
Is Hai Feng Teng the same as "kadsura vine," and how is it different from black pepper or kava?
Hai Feng Teng and "kadsura vine" are the same plant: Piper kadsura, which also carries the older name Piper futokadsura - so they are one and the same, not two different herbs. It belongs to the pepper genus (Piper), but it is different from Black Pepper (Piper nigrum, the fruit), Cubeb (Piper cubeba, the fruit), and Kava (Piper methysticum, the root), which we list separately. Note also that the species name "kadsura" is unrelated to the separate plant genus Kadsura. We label ours clearly as Piper kadsura stem.
How do I use Hai Feng Teng / kadsura pepper stem liquid extract?
Shake well first. A typical amount is 20 to 30 drops in 2 oz of water, up to three times a day, or as directed by your practitioner, and keep to short-term use. Do NOT use it during pregnancy or if you are trying to conceive. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to water softens the taste. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light, and shake before each use.
Is Hai Feng Teng right for everyone? Safety information.
Please read this carefully. Hai Feng Teng (Piper kadsura) is regarded as non-toxic in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia, and no significant toxic compounds have been identified at normal doses. Pregnancy and conception: research indicates it can lower embryo implantation, so do NOT use it during pregnancy or while trying to conceive, and consult your practitioner before use while breastfeeding. Reassurance on a common concern: unlike some "channel-opening" vine herbs, Piper kadsura is not a source of aristolochic acid (that risk belongs to unrelated Aristolochia plants), but always favor clearly identified, tested material. Keep to the suggested serving and short-term use. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Do not give it to infants or children. This tincture contains alcohol and should be stored in a cool, dark place. Keep out of reach of children. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.
