Frequently Asked Questions about Jamaican Dogwood Extract
What is Jamaican Dogwood (Piscidia piscipula) topical extract?
Jamaican Dogwood is the common name for Piscidia piscipula, a tree of the legume family (Fabaceae) native to the Caribbean and Florida, also called Fish Poison Tree and Fishfuddle; the dried bark is known in pharmacy as Cortex Piscidiae. This is a liquid extract of the dried bark FOR EXTERNAL (TOPICAL) USE ONLY - it is not for internal use. This alcohol-free version is a vegetable-glycerin glycerite, applied to intact skin. Jamaican Dogwood naturally contains rotenoids, which can be strongly sedating and hard on the body if taken internally, which is why we offer it strictly for external use. Please read the important safety notes below.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Piscidia piscipula bark for external use; only the solvent differs. This alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water; the tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method with a long shelf life. Choose whichever suits your topical routine. The bark inside is identical, and the same external-use safety notes apply to both - neither is for internal use.
Is Jamaican Dogwood the same as Dogwood or Jamaican Quassia?
No - they are different plants that are easy to confuse by name. Jamaican Dogwood is Piscidia piscipula, a legume tree, and we use its bark. Dogwood is Cornus florida, a completely different tree of the dogwood family, which we list separately (also bark). Jamaican Quassia is Picrasma excelsa, another different tree, which we also list separately. They share words in their common names but are not the same plant. We label this page clearly as Piscidia piscipula bark.
How do I use Jamaican Dogwood topical liquid extract?
For external use only. Shake well first, and do a patch test on a small area before wider use. Apply to intact skin only - do not use on open wounds or broken skin, and avoid contact with the eyes and mucous membranes. Do not take it internally. It may stain clothing, so allow it to dry. Discontinue use if any irritation or reaction occurs. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light, and keep out of reach of children.
Is Jamaican Dogwood topical safe for everyone? Important safety information.
Please read this carefully. External use only: this product is not for internal use. Jamaican Dogwood contains rotenoids and can be strongly sedating; taken internally it has been linked to serious effects, so keep it to external use and do not swallow it. Skin: apply to intact skin only, not to open wounds; avoid the eyes and mucous membranes; do a patch test first, and stop if redness, itching, or rash develops. Pregnancy and nursing: do not use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding - Jamaican Dogwood has strong effects on the uterus. Do not use on children under 18. If you have a medical condition or take medication - especially sedatives - consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. This alcohol-free glycerite is best refrigerated after opening. Keep out of reach of children. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
