Jin Qiao Mai (Polygonum convolvulus) is a fast-growing annual flowering plant in the Polygonaceae family. It originates from Europe, Asia and northern Africa. Polygonum convolvulus is a herbaceous vine that can grow up to 1–1.5 m in length, with stems that twine clockwise round other plant stems. The alternate triangular leaves are about 1.5–6 cm long and 0.7–3 cm wide with a 6–15 mm petiole; the basal lobes of the leaves are pointed at the petiole. The greenish-pink to greenish white flowers are small and clustered on short racemes. The flowers have 5 sepals, the 3 outer ones are larger and show a keel. The flowering period is from July to August. *

Frequently Asked Questions about Jin Qiao Mai Extract
What is Jin Qiao Mai / golden buckwheat (Fagopyrum dibotrys) rhizome extract?
Jin Qiao Mai is the Chinese name for the dried rhizome of Fagopyrum dibotrys, a plant of the buckwheat family (Polygonaceae) also called golden buckwheat, perennial buckwheat, or wild buckwheat; in pharmacy it is known as Rhizoma Fagopyri Dibotryis. This tincture is an alcohol extract of the dried rhizome, taken by the drop. A couple of points matter: because it is a buckwheat-family plant, it should be avoided by anyone with a buckwheat allergy, and buckwheat plants contain fagopyrin, which can make the skin more sensitive to sunlight. It is also not to be used during pregnancy. Please read the safety notes below carefully.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Fagopyrum dibotrys rhizome; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The rhizome inside is identical, and the same safety notes apply to both.
Is Jin Qiao Mai the same as common buckwheat?
No - they are related but different. Jin Qiao Mai is the rhizome (underground stem) of Fagopyrum dibotrys, the golden or perennial buckwheat, which we carry here. Common Buckwheat is a different species, Fagopyrum esculentum - we sell it as the sprouting seed and as the hulls (sometimes listed under the older name Polygonum fagopyrum). They belong to the same buckwheat family (Polygonaceae) but are different species and different parts. All buckwheat-family plants share the buckwheat allergen, so anyone allergic to buckwheat should avoid them. We label ours clearly as Fagopyrum dibotrys rhizome.
How do I use Jin Qiao Mai / golden buckwheat liquid extract?
Shake well first. A typical amount is 20 to 30 drops in 2 oz of water, up to three times a day, or as directed by your practitioner, and keep to short-term use. Do NOT use it during pregnancy. Because buckwheat contains fagopyrin, which can increase sun sensitivity, it is wise to limit strong sun or tanning while using it. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to water softens the taste. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light, and shake before each use.
Is Jin Qiao Mai right for everyone? Safety information.
Please read this carefully. Buckwheat allergy: Jin Qiao Mai is a buckwheat-family plant, so do not use it if you are allergic to buckwheat - reactions can be serious. Sun sensitivity: buckwheat plants contain fagopyrin, a compound that can make the skin more sensitive to sunlight (a reaction called fagopyrism), so limit strong sun or UV exposure while using it and stop if you notice skin reactions. Pregnancy and nursing: do not use during pregnancy, and consult your practitioner before use while breastfeeding. Keep to short-term use. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Do not give it to infants or children. This tincture contains alcohol and should be stored in a cool, dark place. Keep out of reach of children.
