Frequently Asked Questions about Stinging Nettle Extract
What is stinging nettle leaf extract used for?
Stinging nettle leaf extract is a dietary supplement made from the dried leaf of Urtica dioica, a perennial herb native to Europe, Asia, North America, and northern Africa. Nettle leaf is one of the most widely used traditional herbs in European herbal practice, valued for its high content of iron, vitamins A, C, and K, chlorophyll, and flavonoids including quercetin. As a dietary supplement, stinging nettle leaf extract is used to support general wellness and a healthy inflammatory response. These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
What is the difference between stinging nettle leaf drops and stinging nettle tincture?
HawaiiPharm offers stinging nettle leaf in two liquid formats. The alcohol-free glycerite drops use vegetable glycerin and purified water as solvents, making them suitable for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The stinging nettle tincture uses grain alcohol as the primary solvent, which is the traditional method of herbal extraction. Both are made from the same dried Urtica dioica leaf.
What is Urtica dioica?
Urtica dioica, commonly known as stinging nettle or common nettle, is a perennial flowering herb in the family Urticaceae. The name "Urtica" derives from the Latin word "urere," meaning to burn, referring to the plant's characteristic stinging hairs (trichomes) on its stems and leaves. These hollow trichomes inject a mixture of chemicals including formic acid, histamine, and serotonin when touched, causing a temporary stinging or burning sensation. This stinging property is completely eliminated by drying, heating, cooking, or liquid extraction - HawaiiPharm's nettle tincture has no stinging properties. Nettle leaf has been used as both food and medicine in traditional cultures across Europe and Asia for centuries. HawaiiPharm's stinging nettle tincture is made from dried Urtica dioica leaf.
How do I use stinging nettle liquid extract?
The suggested use is 20-30 drops taken three times daily, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Add the drops to water, tea, or juice before consuming. Shake the bottle well before each use, as natural separation may occur. Store in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight. Do not exceed the suggested serving size unless directed by a healthcare professional.
Are there any precautions when taking stinging nettle supplement?
Stinging nettle leaf contains vitamin K, which may interact with blood-thinning medications such as warfarin - consult your healthcare provider before use if you take anticoagulants. Nettle leaf may have mild diuretic effects and could affect blood sugar levels; consult a healthcare provider if you take diabetes medications or diuretics. Not recommended during pregnancy without prior medical advice. Do not use if you have known allergies to plants in the Urticaceae family. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS

Our Stinging Nettle (Urtica Dioica) Leaf is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.

METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION

Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.

COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING

Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
  • Viscosity measurement
  • Refractometric analysis
