What is White Nettle (Lamium album) leaf extract?

White nettle, more precisely called white dead-nettle, is a soft plant of the mint family (Lamiaceae); its botanical name is Lamium album. Despite the name it does NOT sting - "dead-nettle" means exactly that. This tincture is an alcohol extract of the dried leaf. White dead-nettle is a food-familiar plant in Europe; its young leaves and flowers are edible, raw or cooked, and it is also known as archangel or dumb nettle. As a precaution it is not recommended during pregnancy, and if you are nursing or take medication please consult your practitioner. Please read the notes below.

What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?

Both are liquid extracts of the same Lamium album; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The plant material inside is the same, and the same notes apply to both.

Is white nettle the same as stinging nettle?

No - this is the single most important point. White nettle is white dead-nettle, Lamium album, of the mint family (Lamiaceae); it does not sting. Stinging nettle is a completely different plant, Urtica dioica, of the nettle family (Urticaceae), and it is the one with stinging hairs used for things like joints, allergies, or prostate support. We sell stinging nettle separately (both leaf and root). The two only share the word "nettle" because their leaves look similar. If you were looking for the true stinging nettle, please choose our Urtica dioica products instead.

How do I use White Nettle liquid extract?

Shake well first. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to water softens the taste. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light, and shake before each use.
